No, it was founded by some church members, but was never controlled by the Church and was non-sectarian from the start.

But from what I assume is the same article I read, they did want to found a Christian university (not, I think, meaning their denomination, I think a more general meaning). But I agree with you, and I also agree with whomever said that most (many might be more accurate) colleges were founded with some connection to a religious group, whether formal or informal.
