Maybe the acc needs ND more than we think. Syracuse and Pitt to the acc now does not do much for football, but it does allow them to renegotiate their espn deal, but probably for not much more money. What it does do is try to force ND's hand. The Big 10 had stated that they are looking south for expansion. They want ND and Texas, which might or might not happen for reasons we all know. The next 2 best choices for them could be Virginia and North Carolina, both highly populated, growing states in the south and AAU members. It has been speculated that they would not leave the acc because of their sister institutions, Virginia Tech and NC State. But what if Virginia Tech and NC State and FL State are offered by the SEC? The states of Virginia and North Carolina would have both of their top state universities in the 2 most stable conferences and they would be a good fit for both conferences. The in-state schools could still play each other at the end of the season;North Carolina vs. NC State, Big 10 vs. SEC on espn.

If this scenario plays out the acc loses FL State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, North Carolina and NC State. What they are left with is Miami on their way down, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Wake, bc,Duke and Maryland. Not much there and they would probably be raided by Big East. Bye bye acc. What swofford needs is something to keep this from happening: Notre Dame. If ND joins acc, everyone stays.

How does swofford get ND to join the acc? you have to destroy the Big East. By taking Pitt and Syracuse, its a good start. When they were invited it looked like Texas, TT, Oklahoma and OK State were going to PAC, big 12 dissolves and maybe merges with Big East, thus saving Big East. He must stop this scenario, so he has to kill Big East now hoping that the remaining Big 12 schools take in the remaining Big East schools. ND is then forced to find a new home. By taking Pitt and Cuse it might help ND's decision because of their history.

This is why I think UCONN is waiting for an acc invite. The acc will not take them until they find out where ND is going. They could take UCONN now as #15 and kill the Big East, or they can wait and hope for the Big 12 to expand and take Louisville and WV, thus acc will not be seen as killing Big East and ND will not view acc as the villains. I think the higher ups at UCONN have been assured they will be in the acc, it's just a matter of when. I would also not be surprised if the acc told Pitt and Cuse that they were pursuing ND to sweeten the pot to get them to join. Swofford might be doing all of this just to save the acc and his job. Just a theory.

Yeah, because North Carolina is going to leave their basketball home and home Duke rivalry. if you said Duke and North Carolina both leaving fine. However, UConn's chances of getting into the ACC depend on 1. Flipper being removed as BC's AD. 2. Notre Dame comes aboard and UConn is 16, or 3. Clemson or Florida State leave the ACC for the SEC. That is about it I do think eventually UConn gets in like SU did but it will take 7-8 years like SU waited.

You have a better shot at winning the lottery five times in a row than Duke and UNC splitting off from each other.

I think anyone who did anything with the goal of forcing ND into a conference is going to fail to realize that goal in the end. I don't see anything right now that makes it seem like anything other than a longshot that ND will give up their FB independence.

If #2 and/or #3 on your list happen, #1 is rendered moot.

the SEC would not play second fiddle to anyone, even the B1g. if the NC schools are going to leave, the SEC would make sure they get the more valuable of the two.

Duke and North Carolina can still play a home and home series out of conference, and the bragging rights will be even bigger because they will be tops in their conference(until UCONN joins acc). If NC and NC State both get invites to the 2 most stable, money making conferences, the North Carolina legislature wouldn't spend too much time worrying about duke, a private university, especially for an additional 20 million per year.

When did the B1G state they were moving south for expansion?

Last I heard half of the schools wanted to expand east to add the NYC market while the other half wanted Chicago to remain the primary market for the B1G and add another midwestern school. Nebraska was the compromise. Which of these two factions would want NC schools?

Delany: Demographics in South may prompt Big Ten expansion

It's been widely speculated that the Big Ten's study to expand has been about getting the Big Ten Network into more homes. That still very well may be true. Yesterday, though, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany added a new twist for possible expansion that will get the SEC's attention: Population growth in the Sun Belt.
"We've been blessed in many ways by the economy and density of the population in the 20th century," Delany told reporters at the Big Ten spring meetings. "In the last 20 years there has been a clear shift of movement into the Sun Belt. The rates of growth in the Sun Belt are four times the rate in the East or the Midwest. That has demographic meaning long term for the economy, for jobs, for recruitment of students, for recruitment of athletes, for recruitment of faculty, for tax base."
Delany described the changes in demography as the most important factor in expansion plans, even ahead of adding television markets to the Big Ten Network. "The shifting population is by itself reason enough to look at the concept of expansion," he said.
The 10 states with the greatest population percentage gain between 2000 and 2009 were located in the Southeast, Southwest and West, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. None are in the Midwest or Northeast.

We have to go to the ACC! We have to go to the ACC! OK....

Wouldn't be surprised if the ACC and Big XII get plundered by the SEC, B1G and Pac-12. Some schools might come crawling back to us.
