At the risk of disagreeing with Coach, I'm not sure that a lot of freshmen try to get away with the same amount of effort as they gave in high school. Rather, the entire college experience--academic, social, and athletic--is so much more demanding that in high school that there is sort of a freshman fog for many. By the time practice roles around late in the afternoon, these kids are mentally tired. It's not a conscious effort to get away with less. They just have a lot less in their mental tanks.
