if their program never recovers or takes a long time to recover... It would be generally considered that Kemba's shot ended their run as an elite program, right?

If you were to find a Pitt fan in 10 years - assuming that they will still exist - and asked him what he thought represented the death knell of the program, I imagine that he would tell you it was Nasir Robinson's foul 88 feet from the hoop with .7 seconds left on the clock in the second round of the tourney.

Kemba's shot was a heart-breaker and it happens; Robinson's foul was a soul-crushingly boneheaded play from a fan's perspective.

I think they will be a consistent top 5 program

Pitt has never been an elite program. They have been very good in conference play, but that doesn't make them an elite program.
I would argue that there are only 2 elite programs in the Big East now. UCONN and Syracuse. Georgetwon, Louisville, West Virginia, and maybe Villanova are the next level. Pitt is in the next tier with Cincinatti. and Marquette. It is the best of the 3rd tier, perhaps, but still below the other 6.

Look, this year could just be a temporary setback. I mean UCONN isn't exactly dominating the world this year and has had off years, too. Hard to make a judgement about Pitt for a couple of year.

Pitt might be elite in their minds but they are not consistent in the NCAA tourney. To say Pitt is an elite program is a little outstretch. UConn is the only team in the big east who is consistent in NCAA tourney play. Then UConn has three National Championships the most in the Big east. I think if Pitt wants to be elite it should take a page out of the UConn playbook.

err... How about Nasir Robinson? Boneheaded play knocked them out of the NCAA as a #1 seed.

That said I really don't think they will free fall. Dixon has done as well in the reg season as any coach who would bring in recruits of the same quality. Bo Ryan is the only name that comes to mind that has done better.

too bad he can't coach in the tourney

You are kidding, right? Pitt may or not have been "elite" but one game and a tough loss doesn't mean squat. UConn had a year when we didn't qualify for the NIT after winning an NC. What sent UConn into the pits?

Pitt has a losing record in the NCAA tournament. What's elite about that?

Define elite please.

Seton Hall has more to brag about than Pitt.

They are like your avatar. They predictably blow at the measured time in the NCAA's. Besides they are scum for their behavior in their dealings with the BE. Furthermore Pitt fans were enjoying flaming how they surpassed UConn as the BE's team prior to last season's BE tournament. So let us enjoy our moment of pleasure in ridiculing them even if it isn't rational.

We must have won the national championship in 2006 after all. I knew there was no such school as George Mason.

I guess qualifying for the NCAA tournament counts as not qualifying for the NIT.
