This offense has regressed after 3 solid weeks of steady play Umass and this game, zero creativity…. All running backs keep running up middle. No attempt to get outside.

ctazy to think this is same team that was throwing flea flickers and reversals.

did the contract with Mazzone expire?

This is the Edsall offense 100%. I seriously hope we will never ever see this crap again at Uconn once the new coaching staff is in place.

It is embarrassing you can turn to any channel for football on TV and see a better offense.

Be thankful for a win. We will have to wait for a new coach and a new scheme before things improve.
To answer your question:
No, Edsall did not coach the team.
Apparently Mazzone is history.
It is what it is.
Get over it.

Actually I’d go a step further. Last two series of downs, all line plunges except for the last pass. A 5 yard pass when we needed ten. Also I watched the clock and on at least two of those plays we hiked the ball with at least 10 seconds on the clock. Whoever was running the offense should be awarded the Edsall award for lack of judgement and fired immediately. Bring Mazzone back.NOW!

Mazzone is gone, Dude. It's all about the new coach next season. I want him back, too, but apparently that ship has sunk.

We don’t need people to ‘get over it’!
Those people are cleverly disguised as ‘empty seats’ each week.

it’s a fair observation. Does Mazzone take his plays with him?

The difference people were seeing wasn't so much the plays that were being called... but the players available to run them.

The Zone Run was a huge part of what Mazzone was calling. The difference was that Tyler Phommachanh was a real threat to run that had to be respected. When your QB isn't a running threat, the zone read doesn't challenge the defense, they barely respect the QB and crash down shutting down the RB. If you watch when Steven Krajewski runs the zone read he's looking for the opportunity to hand it off, Tyler Phommachanh was reading and looking for that opportunity to pull and make a play himself. When the end being read had to guess who to attack the play was open... now, not so much. You'll also notice that many of Steven Krajewski's runs are the times he surprised the defense and actually made the clear read to pull and ran for yardage on a zone run... the problem is he can't pull on some of those borderline reads because his speed doesn't necessarily put him in the best position to beat the read end one on one.

Mazzone's offense was predicated on getting the ball to athletes in space. Tyler Phommachanh was one of those athletes, possibly the best of them. The other part was the bubble screen game trying to find guys out into space on the edge.. that isn't something that has worked well for UConn, particularly the last few weeks. Steven Krajewski isn't the same type of QB as Tyler Phommachanh and running that offense is going to be tough. They can't run traditionally because the line isn't blocking it, and they can't use zone reads to setup play-action shots (which is where Steven Krajewski has had success). Add to that a missing LT who was anticipated to be an NFL prospect the last two weeks and a missing center that meant the backup who started the year off as one of the worst performers is back in (seriously have you ever seen so many times the center clearly forgot the snap count).

If it were up to me and if we have the bodies to install it and a line to protect it, if Steven Krajewski is the QB, I'd try to turn into a three-step drop quick passing game offense to open things up. You can run your slants and crossing routes which are SKs best passing plays. The challenge is that, that will expose this offense to more risk and Steven Krajewski has been turnover prone. If you can start to threaten the defense with the passing game (or make them think that you are trying to threaten them), then hopefully you can start to get more balance with the run, allowing you to take shots on play-action.

Best assessment by far on our qbs!

I wonder if Mazzone bailed because Phommachanh got hurt and he figured there wasn't much he could do for us without Phommachanh at QB, given the type of offense he was trying to run.

We are at a disadvantage right now running mostly shotgun snaps to Steven Krajewski with delayed/read handoffs as he is not a real threat to keep the ball as ScottVib points out. Having Rose out does not help but we should have Steven Krajewski under center with a tight end on the LOS next to a tackle and run more of a pro style offense with tight ends running the seem on play action plays. This would also mean we are running more straight ahead quick hitting running plays with less pulling by O-lineman that struggle to block in the first place. Hell, go 2 tight ends with Marion and Clercius or Brewton out wide at times. Change things up!

I've long wondered why we don't run more quick hitters with Burns or any of the other backs for that matter. Too many negative yardage or no gain plays with the slow developing stuff and the WR screens.

Don't care who was available, the play calling sucked. So up till 11:15 of 3rd quarter UConn overcame having no blocking, QB that can't run, no senior tight end, no consultant to suggest schemes during the week and then it all came apart?
No, You turtle and get Yale game 2nd half stats on offense and almost snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

They laid an egg in the second half after the last score by UConn. It is like they just said let's run the ball and play it safe. That lead to an almost loss. Not one coach should walk the sidelines after this season. That was such a crap show and they should have won by three scores instead of a last second stop of a hail Mary
