Watched the game. Overall, good game from Charde; great in parts, not-so-great in others. Analysis below.
With Charde, a lot of the same things are still there that were there in high school. Incredible scorer (though much greater range now than high school); can be explosive at times in terms of her offensive output; not a lot of attention to defense (though never been a priority for the Mercury, so no different than her teammates in that regard); ballstopper (at times); constantly looking to score (which is good and bad).
The biggest problem, frankly, is that she is not Penny Taylor. Yes, Phoenix had point guards and yes, Taurasi, will always garner her share of assists. But Taylor not only lead Phoenix in assists, last year, she was 8th in the entire WNBA in assists and 9th in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio. Think about this...Penny had 20 more assists than Tamika Catchings (last year's MVP) and played in 4 fewer games. Taylor's A/TO was 2.08-to-1, which would be great for a point guard, but is outstanding for a small forward (Catchings was at 1.58). Penny nearly became the first player in WNBA history to average at least 15 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds per game (finishing at 16.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg, and 4.7 apg).
Charde can be a great scorer, but does not facilitate the ball well within the offense (yet). Part of the reason Dupree only got 8 shots is that she is so used to Penny just finding her with the ball (even when she does not demand it). Now, Charde did get three assists yesterday, but that was as a result of passing once scoring was not a viable option. She scored 24 points, but took 22 shots to get there (though a few made free throws would have helped that ratio). In the fourth quarter, however, she shot 1-7 (she was 8-15 through three quarters) and committed two turnovers.
Make no mistake...while I am dissecting Charde's game, she was the entire reason Phoenix was able to have the score tied at the end of the first quarter and was even within striking distance in the third quarter. So much of the analysis and areas of improvement are due to the fact that she is not Penny Taylor, yet has to replace what Penny does, as well as the fact that she *had* to shoot as much as she did because for long stretches, no one else could score. Problem is, for as many that she made early on, she was missing that many late. But when you are scorer, you keep trying to score. And scoring is Charde's strength - and Phoenix needs that!
If Charde develops consistency with her scoring, I would love to see a lineup with Prahalis/Taurasi/Houston/Bonner/Dupree. Small in the paint, but good height at 2-3-4. And if Phoenix is going to get outrebounded and pay only passable attention to defense (like team always does), why not put the best scoring options out there?

great analysis cam. and you hit the nail on the head as far as what Charde's strengths and weaknesses are. but Phx seems like the perfect place for her. she will never be as complete a player as Penny Taylor, but she can still be a really strong part of their rotation if she continues to work on her game and improve.

Charde was "jacking up" shots down the stretch (1-7) and that ripped into her FG percentage. She was shooting 3's off the pass during fast breaks. She can knock down 3's but she's no Diana.
