Diamond DeShields said:
It was ugly at times but we were able to find a way to get the win. On a much better note, Coach Geno Auriemma and Shea Ralph of University of Connecticut were in the building, as well as Coach Joy Cheek of Duke. It’s always good to see a familiar face in the stands. People wonder how it feels to play in front of such prestigious universities as that, and i say, if you were truly passionate about the sport, whether you are in front of every coach in america or playing in your backyard, you will still play to the best of your abilities just as if no one is watching.

"Started off very hot and in the first. In the two middle quarters decided to distribute a little more, and closing the game off I started putting the ball back through the hoop."

Always handy to be able to turn your scoring on and off like a light switch :D

Hopefully DD makes a decision soon....We know Maryland Terrapins are interested , now Duke. And I would guess the rest of the ACC as well.

WOW! That is a well written, and very thoughtful blog. I like Diamonds show of respect for the other teams and for many individual players.

For a high school Junior, Diamond appears to be one very sharp kid.

Please come to UConn, DD.

Me, too, but this part tickled my funny bone:

"Marietta has two great guards and a Courtney Sprague who has never met a shot she doesn’t like ...Sprague was my task for the night and all around i handled that pretty well, I would say."

Go DD !! :p

DD comes from a terrific family. Dad's a former MLB player. Mom's a host for a local public broadcasting show and an education consultant. At least one of her brothers plays professional baseball. BTW, I think she has two sisters, and I could be wrong on this, but I think they're younger. Possible Ogwumike-style pipeline?

In any case, you know you're getting a girl whose head is on straight and has been raised by pros. She's going to be able to handle the transition to college in terms of maturation, adademics, and basketball. The only question is where this transition process will occur. Obviously, we all hope it's in Storrs.

That was my thought as well. She discusses the upcoming tournament intelligently, demonstrates both knowledge of and respect for the other teams, and talks about her own game in a restrained way that, to me, said "I honestly think I played pretty darn well but I also don't want to sound like I'm bragging."

There are many, many athletes she could teach about smart, respectful comments in the public sphere. Some of them are grown adults who shouldn't need the lesson.

She is, also, the player who said she was taking time with her recruiting so that her teammates could have more exposure. A great example of putting teammates first.
