To call the offense vanilla is an insult to vanilla.

Maine had everyone within eight yards of the LOS and run blitzed early and often and we still ran up the gut. Diaco didn't do a single thing to loosen the defense. The only deep ball was in the two minute drill of the first half. We wasted great field position and gave Maine confidence with our lack of imagination. Just an awful offensive scheme.

Not the first time he coaches so conservatively it's practically coaching below the level of the opponent. I know coaches are paranoid about not putting stuff on tape but this is ridiculous.

Seriously, why would these coaches be reluctant to show any offensive plays from the play book, when Uconn has a history of having very poor offensive teams that can't score points ?

I was at the game. You knew right away it was going to (needlessly) come down to the wire when we did absolutely nothing with great field position our first 3 possessions including punting on 4th and 1 at midfield. The play calling with that early field position was incredibly conservative as well. We gave Maine reason to believe they could hang in this right from the beginning. Will be shocked if BS makes it through the season. Was under far too much pressure from Maine! (O Line improvement?!?!). Was also disappointed with how much time Maine's QB had to throw (Uhhh defense??).

I did enjoy the game. People on the fence should really go. I'm a recluse and I had a good time. Parked at the Club across the street. Easy walk and easy to get out. A cosy 30K that was loud when needed to be and was dying to explode but was taken out of it from the start with the mindset from the sidelines.

When we actually open up the offense and go 4 wide things look much better...Sherriffs has those running lanes and made some nice throws. That first quarter offense was absolutely sickening.

3 man rush on 3rd and long late in the game was infuriating too. I don't think we laid a single finger on their QB all night.

Only thing we can hope for is Diaco doesn't want to show everything in a preseason game

So the season starts in October after all the preseason games?

Every time us fans have said this over the past 6 seasons, we've been proven wrong. What you see on week one is what the team is for the season. This is still a team with an OLine that can't sustain blocks, a staff that is very poor at game management, an offense that doesn't showcase its game breakers and a green secondary.

This is a 3-5 win team.

Especially if turnover margin regresses to the mean this year.

My gut instinct, like CTMike, is to disagree with Palatine, but he's right. That was some truly godawful coaching.

Verducci needs to go. This is really, really bad.
This not a Verdducci problem. This is the BD philosophy.Keep offense basic and limit turnovers. Be in a game in the fourth quarter to get the wins. It is the philosophy that is consistent with his defensive background.

Listen to his post game presser at 8:50. He basically states his philosophy. He wants a fourth quarter game. Any OC will be handcuffed by a head coach with this outlook and basic belief system.

My concern is Bob's/Verducci's inability to call a SMART game.

First Half - Called conservative, playing scared, trying to avoid mistakes. Maine hangs in due to big plays. Sherrifs finds himself running for his life and practically getting killed against an FBS opponent. Not trying for ANY points at the end of the half was a joke.

Second Half - The conservative game plan finally starts paying off. You can start to see Maine wear down on defense. Run game starts rolling and breaking off chunk yards. Long drive is going great, starting to take control...
Then what? Someone thought it was a good idea to call a misdirection play-action pass where your QB has his back to the defense after Maine has shown exotic all-out blitzes all night? That was one of the most ill-advised play calls I've ever seen, given the game plan and situation.

If you're going to play conservative, stick to the game plan when it finally starts to work down the stretch. Wear the team out, grind it out, and win. Don't get 'tricky' when the offense finally starts to roll. Force the opponent to stop what's working, then adjust. Diaco's crazy defintely got the best of him on that play call.

Thankfully, the team was resilient. Minus 3 big plays from Maine and we blow them out. Just don't give a team like that an opportunity to make those plays.

Would you trade Diaco for Maine's coach? Probably not, but you have to admit you give it serious consideration. Maine's gameplan on both sides of the ball made more sense and the players were able to execute it.

"Wants a fourth quarter game"? Against Maine? That game needs to be a blow out, an easy season opener. UConn left the Yankee Conference decades ago, geez. And, never mind handcuffing an OC, what high school playmakers are ever going to want to come and play for that conservative an offense?
