Aresco: American 'could be above the line' in Division 4

It was actually Matt Stover via the Tim Brando Show who used the phrase "above the line," and he was referencing Aresco's argument that the American needs to be a part of D4. Aresco never actually said that.

The AAC going forward lacks a name brand school, if you will. In the past it has had Miami, VPI, and WVU who have all had a lot of success in football and Syracuse who has one of the most recognizable basketball brands in the country, not to mention Louisville who has had success in both of those areas. You could even throw in Pitt who won football championships in the past.

Throw a bunch of CUSA teams and a MAC school and some leftovers together and what do you get? The Big East and ACC had great basketball for decades. The SEC, Big 10, and Big 12 have all had a lot of football success. What does the AAC have? There isn't a football blueblood and outside of UConn nobody has done much basketball wise recently. Cincinnati has won a lot of games the last few years but did anybody really notice? Memphis is infamous for one of the biggest basketball scandals in the country. What's the difference between USF and UCF? Can SMU and Houston compete with the other Texas schools? What is Tulane doing in this conference?

If the AAC wants to separate itself from the other non power conferences it has to build an identity. Is it a great football conference? Is it a great basketball conference? What does it have to do to accomplish these things?

Obviously this is a major shortcoming to the league. I think it goes without saying. The flip side, if D4 is limited to a pool of [60] teams with scheduling limited to either 1 or perhaps even no non D4 games, then will the public really enjoy a slew of 7 and 5 schools muddling it out. I am not sure a compressed system which will toss aside the david vs goliath fun college football has always provided will be as much fun. Sadly, the AAC gives the D4 some doormats.
