Today had to be the worst kind of nightmare for Debbie Antonelli!!! And the SEC must haunt her dreams. There seems to be a new rule in play in SEC gyms this year (I missed the NCAA rule change notice) that the first team to score 20+ points in a quarter is awarded the win.
1. In TN it looked like we might have the longest game in the history of WCBB as neither team look like they would succeed until one team dropped from exhaustion - neither team having reach 15 points during the first three quarters of the game, but then VaTech having gone 3-10 on FTs through three quarters, shocked the arena by connecting on 7-10 FTs over the last 70 seconds to just barely reach the promise land with 21 points. TN considered lodging a protest for 'unreasonably and unconscionably taking advantages of their defensive strategy with unprecedented accuracy', but cooler heads prevailed as no one wanted to be forced to watch another minute of 'action'. TN fans still voiced opinions that VaTech are dirty players for changing up strategies in the 4th quarter and trying to actually make the FTs.
2. In a much anticipated return match in SC, Gamecocks and Devils both tantalized with 16 point quarters, but it too looked bleak for only a 40 minute game, when out of nowhere Wilson swooped in for a lay-up with only 2 seconds left in the fourth quarter to seal the 20 points required and walk off victorious.
3. In Athens, many people considered that Georgia was just showing off when they twice made it to 20 points in the second half - there is some confusion as to why the fourth quarter was played as most believed achieving the 20 point total in the third quarter was sufficient to seal the deal - it is always a little confusing adapting to these new rules. It was a truly heartbreaking loss for the Pirates of SH as they had two shots at that critical 20 points in the waning seconds of the second quarter but were forced to settle for a disappointing 18 - as close as they came to challenging for the win all game.
4. Rutgers once again was on the upswing in this inconsistent season getting their 21 point quarter for the win before half time and coasted the rest of the game against Arkansas
5. If Georgia was showing off, I am not sure what you should call what happened with Alabama, Mississippi State and at Ole Miss - dancing on peoples graves?! All three teams accomplished the 20 point quarter three times in their games against their standard cupcakes. People around the country say the SEC is arrogant, perhaps this is the smoking gun they have been waiting for! At least the good folks of TnState can hold their heads high, as they prevented the first half debacle, by matching MsState's 20 point second quarter.
Elsewhere amongst the top 25 games - folks in Evanston are thankful that the Big10 has not adopted these experimental rules as Northwestern and Milwaukee might still be playing. Michigan, Arizona, and Syracuse wouldn't have cared as they each comfortably got to 20 points once during their games and their opponents never looked like they would threaten.
