So my 1st edition Motorola Razr silver flip phone circa 2003 the bed. I went out and got a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. It's nice. But there's a lot of apps.

What's the best Launcher? I don't like the Samsung home screen layout.

What other apps are worthwhile?

(edit: forgot to put OT in the title. amateur. sorry.)

I had that same phone. Mine dropped out of my shirt pocket into a gin and tonic.

It was a hard phone to hold on to. I dropped two in the toilet while peeing.

Don't like go launcher. It was OK for Gingerbread but for Android 4+ I'd go with Nova. It's lightweight, stable and fast.

Swiftkey flow for keyboard, though it's preloaded on my wife's Galaxy S4 so it might be preloaded on yours. It's almost as good as Swype but multiple language support is better and it loads faster.

Tapatalk for forums.
Rainy days for doppler radar.
Task killer is built into android now. Long press menu or home button on the Galaxy phones with physical home button. Then swipe the app to the left or to the right.
Google now widget for weather and breaking news.
Apps that I frequently use are gas buddy, shazam, pandora, facebook, zillow, Google keep, chrome, maps, kindle.

Im still on Ice Cream Sandwich. Are you saying Nova is better for Jelly Bean ???
Can you explain why ??? I like customization. Its the best part of GO for me.
I ask because im getting a Jelly Bean phone tomorrow.

Awesome guys, keep it coming.

Anyone have any good camera-enhancer/photo-editor combo apps? Or should I go individual there?

You know I hear this repeated, especially from kids. Is there any text that is so important it can't wait a half minute? (or a minute and half for you old guys.) Keep it in your pants! There, hopefully that prevents another toilet related phone tragedy.

Reddit News Free if you reddit.
Map My Ride (or Strava, though I haven't tried it) for tracking your cycling / jogging routes
ConvertPad if you ever have to convert scientific units or travel to countries that use the metric system.
If you're a musician, there are metronome and tuner apps that are handy... if you use youtube, wikipedia, IMDB, rotten tomatoes, yelp a lot they have apps that you may find nicer than using a web browser.

Oh, and if you have T-Mobile, Wi-Fi calling is great, especially if you are in an area with poor cell service but you have access to wi-fi.

tapatalk is obvious for active board members.
gasbuddy is pretty useful and becomes addictive if you start reporting prices. We're waged in a battle for best reporter at our three local stations.
soundhound is a really cool app that listens to whatever music is on and tells you who it is and often has the words in time with the music. Great when you're sitting in a restaurant and want to know who's singing.
if you use onenote on your computer, get the android app and with MS skydrive you can get your notes anywhere
listonic is very cool for keeping shopping lists. I share the sign on with my wife so as we walk through a store and check stuff off, we can cover the place in half the time and not pick up the same thing.
if you used the old google reader, you can get feedly and synch it with your computer for reading rss feeds.
brightest flashlight is useful in really dark restaurants or finding a keyhole at night....
there are tons of weather apps - I find the weather channel's is the most accurate.
I have an app that shows my data use even though I have an unlimited plan.
also you might want to get a battery app that shows battery usage and can be used to kill unwanted processes.
stupid apps that I keep around: the EASY button from staples; crickets - which just plays cricket sound and is awesome in meetings when someone says something stupid.

In fairness to me, they were long business calls and I just had to go. Granted, they were probably half in the bag happy hour calls, but they were business calls.

I've tried all the launchers and Apex is by far my favorite. I used to be a Go disciple but IMO Apex took things to another level.

Handcent is my fav SMS client.
Zedge is a cool app with tons of wallpaper and ringtones/notification sounds.
Spotify or Google Play Music All Access for music (each is $9/mo for the real deal).

It was a hard phone to hold on to. I dropped two in the toilet while peeing.

Had same problem, then made an effort to always sit when holding the phone. That worked for a couple of times till I absentmindedly flushed using the same hand. Now its speakerphone only.

On Tuesday while playing golf my S3 got wet when in the cart. Sprinkler went off and gave it a good soaking. The rice solution worked perfectly bringing it back to life. I hear it works with submerged phones as well if quickly retrieved.

WTF talks on the phone while taking a leak? That's just twisted. Seriously - tell the person to hold on, put the phone down in a room not starting with 'bath' and do your business. The conversation can wait.

I think every time I was in the bathroom in my dorm freshman year there was someone yacking on the phone.

I use the nova launcher. Highly customizable. The Galaxy S4 might be the best smartphone ever made. It was a good choice.

BTW, I find TVFoodMap useful. It's how I found Corey's Catsup & Mustard in Manchester....and Franklins in Austin, TX.

Sigh. Now I know I'm getting old. I can't follow this thread. "Nova is good for Jellybean" makes me think Kobe's father should have played for one of our old Big East rivals.

One of the few words I feel comfortable knowing the context in this thread is 'toilet'. Which will probably soon be replaced by the iDump.

Ahh I hadn't read this far when I sent my previous post. Thanks for the info.
