MSGRET's 10-10-10 post in the 3 things in the Dayton game thread made me think about the above thread topic. I factored in things like positions, returning from injuries, wanting to get a look at all the players and an anticipated 30 point MOV.

Here's my best guesstimate : PB-20; Azzi-20; NM-17; KK-17; Ash-12; Ines-5 ;Liya-25; ICE-20; CD-20; Q-12; Aubrey-20; Yanna-5; Amari-5; Rounding (a late recruit)-2

Those estimates make sense. But while I think the MOV will be closer to 45, I also think that the "veterans" will get 3-5 minutes more than what you have on average.

The toughest part of their schedule is from November 12 to December 16 - including NC State, Maryland, Minnesota, UCLA, Kansas, Texas, Ball State, UNC and Louisville. Yikes. I can`t imagine any other team is facing a gauntlet like that this early.

Geno will want his main cogs on the floor a bit longer despite the blowout score to help get them ready for what is about to come.

And it would be great if Yanna gets any minutes. Hopefully she is good to go. I have a feeling that there are going to be plenty of times this year when we will need her to contribute. With Jana out for the year we need someone else to provide depth inside.

seems a bit high for Yanna, Amari, and Inez; maybe a little high for Ice, he'll maybe want Edwards to maintain potential All-american stats

I think that is a really good estimation and I might suggest that Azzi and Nika get 4-5 more minutes and they are taken from Shade and Samuel's. Not because Dayton is in the game but because they want to work on things with the core 8 in preparation for upcoming games.

Paige 20
Azzi 20
Nika 20
Caroline 20
Aaliyah 20

That’s the core 5 and amounts to 100 mins

Aubrey 15 (because Geno wants to save her)
Ice 20
KK 15
Ashlynn 10
Qadence 10
That’s the second 5 player unit and it amounts to 80 mins

Amari 10
Inês 10
That’s everyone and 200 total mins, since I don’t expect Ayanna to play yet. When she comes back (hopefully in time for the MD game) I expect her minutes initially to come from Ice and KK.

I think you’re short 10 minutes.

Core 5 will total more than 100. Amari / Inez less than 20 total. KK may get a bit more than 15

Just this one game. Some fans are looking at this game as a one time opportunity to really spread around the playing time in a game that counts but a coach will likely look at it primarily as a one time opportunity to prepare for the next tougher game - will want to provide enough minutes to the players that will likely constitute the rotation for yjat next game

The broader question is whether Geno will choose door #1 and opt to let his top 8 rotation play a lot of minutes to prepare them for hard games coming up soon or choose door #2 and let the deeper bench get more minutes in an easy game to see how they do and give them game experience. I suspect that he'll go for door #1 for about the first three quarters and I'd agree with that. Now is the time to get his regular rotation up to speed; after the early season stretch of losable games and we get into league games there will be plenty of opportunities to rest the core rotation and give the deep bench more playing time. If there is an exception to that it would be getting Ayanna enough minutes to get her back into game shape as having another player that can help out down low is a real need.

This sounds reasonable and is what I won’t be surprised to see this week.

But it may also depend on how much faith he has in the new kids beyond Ice and KK. Ashlynn is a fighter and he may want to get her into competitive games as soon as possible, especially if he wants to try out that press.

And when Ayanna returns, the 5+3 will become 5+4 almost automatically.

No doubt this season may give Geno more quality options than he (or we) are used to. Historically he has gone with a core of 7 or 8 (if available - see last year and the year before). Ayanna, Ashlynn and Q may make their case that they deserve minutes when games are still in doubt - I hope so. Maybe it comes down to whether Geno thinks too large a regular rotation, even with good players, interferes with developing great team cohesion. We'll know soon enough.

Geno has to get his team ready to play a full game so his rotations in this game will be close to what they will be in the season. Now if they are up by 50 in the first half then he will call off the dogs and rotate in his younger players. When you play good teams early you must get everyone ready to play a whole game and since it is early I expect to see a lot of the core players.

I also think you will be able to see who the 7-8 players are that will see significant time this season. As much talk as there is about playing 10 deep it isn't going to happen once the games matter.

Good point. But he did say that he wanted to use Aubrey more judiciously this season, in short bursts so to speak. Which makes sense to me, since her speed is more devastating as a change of pace from what the opposing team has already seen.

And Ayanna probably needs to be eased in to the rotation. She had a bit of competitive game experience last season, so I think he’ll want to get her back into shape for that.

And Paige (and maybe Azzi and Caroline too) will probably still be on some sort of limited minutes for the coming week, competitive game or not. They may not have unrestricted minutes until the Caymans.

I agree with this assessment as well, with a few minor refinements. With Paige's injured thumb, I don't think she will get quite so many minutes just yet. And Azzi's minutes will depend upon if she starts out hot or not. If she is hitting 3's early, she won't get as many minutes. If it takes a while to get going, she will stay in longer.

FWIW... I think Azzi and Liya will lead with minutes played. Maybe 25-28 or so.

I think Nika and Caroline are in the low 20's. I would be surprised if Paige gets a full 20, given her thumb, but we will see. I was surprised to see Aubrey come off the bench in the exhibition game, but suspect she, Ice and KK will be close to 20.

I think Q and Ash will get about 10 MPG and Ines and Amari in the 4-5 minute range. I think at the end of the game we will see one of the starters on the floor. Maybe Nika. Geno even said in his presser that they are playing around with combos on the floor and they need to be careful "or the 4th quarter will look like 15-13" or something like that.

It was clear to him and everyone else that KK, Ash, Q, Amari and Ines is a very offensively challenged group.

Yes, that seems clear. They didn’t hit their spots in the offensive scheme. Looked practically like pick up game offense. Put Nika in that group and I imagine it would tighten up pretty quickly.

My guess is that as always, it will depend on whatever each player does in their practices. Geno is a firm believer in that. Who ever the opponent is will depend on how he will coach. I believe he stated that for the more challenging teams he would leave the starting five in longer until he felt it was safe to go to his bench. There is NO-WAY I would try to second guess Geno. He has proven he is the master of Women's BB. GO HUSKIES!!!!

Well done, Bone Dog. I also appreciate that you refer to Ayanna by her name. Most folks tend to delete the A. We keep going in that direction and we'll have a team of Ika, Zzi, Aige, et al.

I don’t see it changing too much when Yanna is back in line up. Just slightly hear and there. If she starts producing as season goes, may be a bigger story / change.

It's a good thing that Ash had two 3 pointers in that otherwise offensively challenged 4th qtr or it would have been ugly. "Q" looks like there is never a shot to be passed up and if that is going to be her game then she better start hitting from beyond the arc better than in that exhibition game

Deacon, you do realize that Geno and the players all refer to her as Yanna.

Agree that Ayanna will need to be eased into the rotation. She had a relatively disappointing season that may well have been due to injury. She was ok in early season, and then fell off a great deal near the end. Last year she got fairly regular playing time mostly because somebody had to provide backup minutes to Dorka and Aaliyah, she was a better option than Amari, and Aubrey and Caroline were needed on the perimeter due to injuries there.

This year Aubrey and Caroline are available at the 4 and are far more proven than Ayanna. Ayanna playing at last years level doesn't guarantee a rotation spot, far from it, since the current presumed rotation of 8 looks strong. She needs to give Geno a reason to expand the rotation to 9, which she might due if she is substantially better than last year, which if it happens probably doesn't happen until much further into the season. I am hoping we ultimately see a player like the number 4 recruit, instead of what we saw late last year, but it is a little hard to know how much her performance was hampered by injury she was trying to play through.

I take (what I think is) a more nuanced view of Ayanna, though I mainly agree with you. She struggled on offense and we all commented on this. But on defense she could be stout when called upon, once she calmed down on the fouling -- i.e. fouled more judiciously :D. How far off is her offensive development? When will she be comfortable taking midrange jumpers, which she was good at in HS? So far, it's mainly been putbacks, and she didn't seem very confident about even those last season.

On defense, I think about the Iowa game -- no Dorka, so she was the primary backup for Aaliyah on Czinano and she held her own. Czinano is very strong and other than Aaliyah we didn't have another player strong enough to muscle with her in the low post besides Ayanna. Aubrey can't do it and Geno wasn't going to put Caroline on her with her concussion issues, even if either of them were strong enough. That was an important matchup and Ayanna really stepped up.

As for Aubrey and Caroline at the 4, I think that's a limited option. They both looked healthy, but I wouldn't want to waste either of them against a strong 4 either. In those situations, Ice is by far the better choice, or will be soon. Aubrey is a slashing scorer and rebounder. But I don't relish the thought of her fighting for position with SC's 4s for example. Caroline is not a slasher so much as a position-and-footwork player. She knows how to get a player on her hip and get them out of her way, and she has those brilliant low-post step-through moves. But here too, I don't want to wear her out against bigger 4s. This season I hope to see her shooting 3s and moving into the low-post when the opposing team doesn't have bigs down there.

So, in the longer term, I have a great deal of confidence that Ayanna will find a place in the rotation. But as you say, it won't happen just yet. In fact, Geno has already said she won't be playing today, and that she's still working on strength drills in practice.

So, for today's game, I expect to see the same starting lineup, with Aubrey KK and Ice coming off the bench as the main rotation. The others will get in as well, but not as much as they did against SCSU. The rotation will begin to contract (slightly) today.

I really liked the minute distribution last night. If they can manage a 20-25 min average for the starters in the so so games like most of the BE games, that leaves a lot in the tank to push hard in the big games and the tournament.
