Danny Hurley at Wagner

Since we've been mentioning him, I read the synopsis for Wagner's game against CCSU yesterday. Hurley seems a little cocky in his comments. Not sure I like the style. Not gracious at all.

Well, Bobby Gonzalez had to take a bunch of questionable character kids at Seton Hall. The thing about Hurley is I find it pretty much unimaginable that he won't be able to recruit well.

He'll get players and he'll get them to play extremely hard. He may not be the most likeable guy in the world, but I see him winning a whole bunch of games at Wagner and being priority #1 whenever a big Philly or New Jersey job becomes available.

Ha! Calhoun is the Pete Rose of college hoops. If he's on your side you love him. If he's the opponent, you hate him.
For those who remember, our last coach was Dom Perno. A very nice guy. What did Leo Derocher (few here probably know who Leo was) say about nice guys?

Nice guys can't defend the three?....Something like that, he's been dead a long time.

Calhoun wasn't the crotchity character he plays today when he first arrived. He was a fast-talking Irishman, sort of like the lead character in Music Man. And he was the low man on the totem pole in the Big East in those days with Boeheim, Thompson (the original), Rollie Masamino, Lou Carrnesseca, The Big East had some coaches...he had to be aggressive to even be heard over some of those guys.

I know its minor, but it isn't endearing use of the language. I like a guy that acts with class on the podium and fire on the sideline. He can tell his players "we are superior" in the locker room all he wants but why say it to a reporter? Why say "we controlled the game start to finish" when a 14 point lead got to 5 in the second half due to pressure defense and turnovers?

Humility can be coached, so I guess he can fix it. Keep in mind, if his father were a teddy bear, I probably wouldn't have thought much of it. Hurley Sr. is a tough SOB and he can be quite petty. Danny has been portrayed as having a major chip on his shoulder in the past as well. Word is he has an inferiority complex from being ridiculed as a disappointment at Seton Hall. Of course, JC has a chip on his shoulder and can be a sore loser, so maybe that is just fine.

My hope is our next coach is more lovable nationally, it helps recruiting.
