Dan Hurley article in the Athletic

Does Dan Hurley post on the BY? This sure sounds like a comment/topic which has been brought up on here more than once.

“You’re such a f—ing soft ass.”

“Where’s your f—ing desperation?”

“Stop f—ing around, just do something decisive!”

Imagine being on the other end of that, uh, communication.

“As a player, and somebody who has big goals and aspirations, that’s what you want,” junior wing Jayden Ross says with a shrug. “A coach that has that sense of urgency, and is willing to push you and, you know, keep it real with you.”

And that’s not off-putting?

“It kind of fires you up,” adds Ball, grinning. “He does it in a way to, like, motivate you. He doesn’t do it in a way to really deteriorate you.”

Ross and Ball agree that everyone receives the same coaching. But on this day, it’s starting center Tarris Reed’s “turn.” After both of Hurley’s title teams were anchored by dominant centers, the coach believes the hulking Reed can be next in that line. Or, rather, needs him to be.

At 6 feet 11 and 265 pounds, Reed looks like he was either chiseled from marble or built in a basketball laboratory. His counting stats — 13.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game — are equally as impressive. But Hurley figures there’s still more meat on the bone. Much more.

“We’re trying to get him to be a destroyer,” Hurley says. “A lot of our season is going to come down to whether we can get that out of that kid.”

Which explains why, after the big man misses a rebound during one installation, Hurley barks at him to run seven stairs. Then, turning his back in disgust: “You never play with any desperation!”

Did the T by Danny cost us the game against Memphis in Maui?
tied game at 92-92 with 40 seconds left, over the back foul on McNeeley was going to send Memphis to the line, the technical gave them an additional 2 foul shots. Memphis made all 4 FTs, 96-92 with 40 seconds and a 2 possession game is a tough hill to climb.

This article reminded me of one of the bigs in the past when Calhoun was coaching decided not to return the following season and transfered instead. For some reason I'm thinking it was Toraino Walker.

Yeah, here's what I found: Toraino Walker was a standout recruit for the University of Connecticut (UConn) men’s basketball team who left the program during the 1992-1993 season, amidst a tense relationship with head coach Jim Calhoun...

So apparently he left during the season itself.

When it comes to roster construction, a firey coach needs to recruit players who are relatively thick skined who can take verbal attacks, and try to communicate slightly differently with each one depending on their mental and emotional makeup.

Just my opinion, there's a fine line with how a coach motivates and gets through to their players when it comes to constructive criticism and teaching. I think some cross the the line where they attack the players personally, where they could instead go hard on what they are and aren't doing.

JC was pretty tough on his players even though he loved them deeply. I seem to remember Calhoun was pretty upset with himself about what happened with Walker and I think made a few adjustments to the way he communicated with his players moving forward.

I don't know how Hurley goes about chastising his players, but like Calhoun he really loves each of them and most seemed to understand that.

The key is for a coach to get his message across where Improvement and corrections take place. They just need to have a balance and combination of who they are and who they are trying to get through to. It's definitely not the easiest things to do especially for a coach that burns hot most of the time.

Thanks, I could not remember.

Comments turned off. They probably don't have enough moderators ;-)
I saw them this morning when I first read the article, I guess before they got turned off. Predictably brutal for Hurley. Lots of BS about him being emotionally immature, insecure, etc. - and they wonder why men are so scared, even today, to actually show their emotions?

I say let them get their panties in a wad. You only have haters like that when you’re successful.

lends some support to the idea hurley wasn’t really focused on recruiting last year as he shoulda been, and that Reed is an enigma

Hey, he’s as annoyed with the rebounding as me!
I don't think you can force desperation into a player - they either have it or they don't. It's hard to continuously light the fire. And yeah, this is part of what keeps Tarris from being great from very good. It's what makes Zubi great, at 20lbs lighter and shorter.

One person claiming to be a UConn fan but saying they wished we had a different coach smdh

"This isn’t a longevity play for me,” says Hurley, 53, in his eighth season in Storrs and the second year of a six-year, $50 million contract. “I want to get to a point where I feel like I have nothing left because I went so hard.”

Does he fullfill that contract?
