“If you are thinking about early signing, you have to think about earlier access. And now that we are able to pay for parents to make official visits, we have to look at staff sizes to handle that.’’

Big Ten schools have different ideas on what recruiting calendar changes to consider.

West Division schools, which generally are farther from large population centers, are interested in allowing paid official visits in the summer. The current calendar, which allows official visits once the fall semester begins, often limits how many recruits can come from long distances.

Schools in both divisions differ on whether a December signing period is worthwhile.

One thing apparently all agree on is that Big Ten schools aren’t disadvantaged in the current world of recruiting, despite the oversigning that occurs most often in the SEC and ACC.

“I really don’t see us disadvantaged,’’ Michigan State A.D. Mark Hollis said. “I chose and love being in the Big Ten. There are pros and cons that come with that.’’

Eichorst said he also hasn’t heard any excuse-making from conference colleagues.

“We have so many incredible strengths in the league,’’ he said. “And then, look at the output. We’ve been doing pretty well.’’


I hope it happens. No reason you shouldn't be able to sign in either late August or Labor Day Weekend. Protects the prospects from getting over recruited IMO

An early signing period is good for smaller D1 schools.

The big boys will fight for the early developed players and then they are committed.

Schools like UConn have to wait for late bloomers and then hope like hell they don't get poached if a kid blows up his senior year.

It will free up coaches to actually focus more on football during the season. And it will stop poaching by the elite programs of kids that commit and then blow up during their senior season. Both good things.

with the volume of student athletes involved it may not work... It might benefit us if it does though... Because it benefits the school moreso than the kid they are recruiting (or decide against recruiting because they end up liking another kid better just before signing day... schools have every right to rescind an offer from a student athlete as well as the student athlete rescinds their verbal pledge to them.... that happens folks). there are so many loopholes to consider...

Recruiting: How NCAA proposals for an early signing date and satellite camps might significantly affect Nebraska

I've asked the NCAA if the proposal allows for earlier, paid official visits. That's a key question here.

And the answer is: Yes.

According to the NCAA's Michelle Hosick, associate director of media and public relations, there will be two early official visit periods:

» From June 1 until the last Saturday before the June signing period. (In 2017, the period would be June 1 through June 24.)

» From July 25-31.
