"The question is, is there a reason for [RU's 13-8 record]? And there is," said Stringer, in her 18th season at Rutgers. "Yes (there have been injuries and growing pains with young players). And do we have the same level of talent (as the top programs)? You tell me.

"I brought a great reputation coming from Iowa. After a while, it runs out in terms of you have to continue to win to keep getting the kids you got to have to get it done. Can’t you people realize what is going on size- and skill-wise? Are you kidding me?

"If you can look at some of these kids (on her roster) and tell me, ‘Coach Stringer, you have better talent,’ I can sell you the London Bridge for $5. How is that?"

:-(

I didn't realize RU is 1-28 vs Top 10 teams since 2009. It's all the kids' fault, I'm sure.

She's a product of a different age, when just getting kids to commit to playing defense made you dominant. I'm still astonished she recruits as well as she does, considering her public persona and yearly locking the kids out of the locker room stories. $5 internet dollars to anyone who can find a picture of her smiling.

I wonder if this will be the final straw for the powers that be at RU.

She cannot have won any friends in the Rutgers athletic department by publicly knocking the football and men's basketball programs and asking how many championships they've won. It's foolish of her to say that stuff. Her comments come across as those of someone who is desperate and angry. She's had a great career, but sadly it appears to be falling apart.

Pure Vivianese. Would have been better if she kept her mouth shut (as can be the case).

There actually is truth in much of what she said, and much probably came out differently than intended. And, in Vivian fashion, she exagerates and automatically adopts a "woe is me" tone. In truth, I was at a semi-private event when we were in NJ in December, and her first words were - "we're not doing well, and its my responsiblity and my job to fix it".

Her anger is not at the other RU teams - its their fans - who have kept up a constant pressure on Rutgers to replace her with a low-salaried option and put that money into Men's BB and Football, where there is a perceived need to have higher salaries. Then the WBB so-called fans - who think for her salary it is a disgrace not to be in the FF every year and have been equally vocal in saying so.

Most RU fans don't even see the part above where she admits having trouble recruiting - instead, they are saying that she is just saying she is wonderful based on her Iowa reputation. And yes, our recruits lack that "go-to" player that seems to be the cornerstone of every other currently highly successful program.

I was looking forward to some RU fans' perspectives. Thanks Knight. I think Colerr is another RU fan on our board - would love to hear from him/her also...

Not surprised in the least. Stringer needs a publicity agent to not be so misunderstood.
She is not having success as a coach with greater or with lesser talent. I said once long ago she has to take a look at what she is doing and make adjustments because the kids are not buying what she is selling these days (once they commit and come on board).

You just cannot say that about your players, period. C Viv has periodically thrown her kids under the bus and there have been times when it seemed to me that her team lost focus over the last few years, but mostly it has been C Viv and her inability to construct a team with a coordinated, modern offense, even when recruiting gives her the tools. To me she has passed into irrelevancy and unfortunately taken the RU program with her.

KBA, with all due respect, RU has had two Top 5 recruiting classes in recent years and one class that included the #2 ranked player in the high school ranks, April Sykes.

Brionna Canty was ranked #6 overall, Rachel Hollivay was #9, Betnijah Laney was #11 and Kahleah Copper and Shakena Richardson #18. Geno recrited Betnijah, Chelsea Lee and April Sykes so he must have thought them capable of playing at a high level. So the RU players are NOT without talent, in fact many recruiting analysts think they're elite players.

What are the odds she will be more successful in the BIG 10 than the Big East?

My guess is that she will fail miserably. She has been able to get some good recruits from the NYC area for many years. I think those connections dry up when her kids will be playing in Iowa and Minnesota and Wisconsin etc.

The bottom line is that she has been a lousy coach for a long time, and changing who she competes against won't change that fact one iota.

Actually, Coach, CViv has strong Chicago connections. That's how she landed Cappie Pondexter. She also coached at Iowa for years and no doubt retains connections there.

Actually, this might be the first sign that she is getting pressure internally.

It is sad though. Sometimes coaches stay around longer than they should. It is her hallmark though that historically her teams can't score. How can she blame a long term trend on all the players that she has coached? The Cappie teams could score because of Cappie. And while her teams have played good defense, there have only been a few of those that have excelled in that area. RU keeps the score down with long offensive possessions.

Letting them wash their own uniforms, keeping them out of the locker room etc can be construed to be strategic coaching. Saying your players have no skill is bush league.

PS.....does this mean the Jewel of the East might be cubic zirconia?

Jody Conrad's revisionist history: CVS established a "dynasty" at Rutgers.

Could have fooled me.
