sounds about right.

Let's be clear on what this is not -- the University of Connecticut is not saying academic rules don't apply to its men's basketball team.
UConn had a bad score two years ago on the Academic Progress Report, a terrifically flawed system that the NCAA nonetheless uses as a measuring stick. UConn paid a price for that score with a loss of two scholarships this season. On teams with only 13 scholarships available, that's no small matter.
Then, the NCAA decided to make APR tied to postseason eligibility. That's fine. But they decided to start immediately, using rolling four-year scores that include the records of players who have long since left campus.
This means UConn, because of that 2010 score, is not able to qualify for next year's NCAA tournament, even with excellent APR scores going forward.
The NCAA, then, is using an arbitrary measuring stick to retroactively punish the team a second time for the same transgression. That's why UConn supporters are up in arms -- no one is saying academics are unimportant.
Anyone rushing to chastise the school or team should keep that in mind before jumping to conclusions.

If this is the case - that a post season ban was implemented and is using scores from years before the implementation, then this is a lawsuit, and where the hell is Blumenthal when you need him? Seriously, pop this wide open. If the NCAA wants a fight, I say give it to them.

There's something about ex post facto laws in the U.S. Constitution because they had it figured out 200 and 30 fuc-ing years ago that it's fundamentally immoral to pass a law and then punish people who broke the law before it was enacted.

Great explanation, I'm hoping somebody Neutral will make a judgement on!

Why can't ESPN, local Horde, and all the self proclaimed college hoop experts analyze this article. It's Bullsh$t. By the way, even coaches like Tark, can sue the NCAA and win. Enough is enough with all the bias vs UConn!

This is what I don't get, for all the freaking members of the Horde, none can provide a decent analysis of this story.

The school volunteers to be governed by the NCAA, what is there to sue about? The only solution is to destroy the group, and we are not at the cool kids table to be able to be a part of that.

People volunteer to work at certain places, and they still have rights to sue in certain circumstances. I'm not sure whether they can sue on this, but the fact that they opt in doesn't mean the NCAA can do whatever they want.

My biggest issue is that the NCAA knew about our two low years when they decided to make the rule change retroactive. They knew that it was mathmatically impossible for UConn to be in compliance. This was a decision to keep UConn out of post season play based on old data. Don't agree that that this was a deliberate shot at UConn? Keep in mind that there is more recent data to make this decision, and if it is used UConn, makes the tourney. The NCAA isn't mandated this information be used, or phasing in it's new rulings.

Someone ought to write to Bilas, he's sharp enough and fair enough to see this for what it is.

The NCAA proves itself by picking on a small number of programs. Bruce Pearl was absolutely killed for his transgressions. Am I to believe that no other schools have committed similar violations? That being said, if other programs have the same academic problems we have had, they will face tournament bans too. This one is not personal although the NCAA seems to have fun sticking it to UCONN. Coach Calhoun deserves better than to have his reputation questioned over and over again. An apology once in a while like in the Boatright case would be nice.

Because there is no other organization that UConn can be part of. There is history of lawsuits against the NCAA. UNLV's coach, North Dakota, and I'm sure more. I mean when there is only one organization that you can join, and they punish you again by enacting an ex postfacto rule, it's going to paint the NCAA in some very bad light. I'm honestly surprised that the Big East hasn't taken action for UConn yet.
