Crystal's Assists

Crystal moved up the UConn career list for assists yesterday. The UConn Media Guide says Jill Brumbaugh is 9th with 541. The Guide does not include Kelly Faris, whom the Courant says has 545. Whether Crystal is 9th (per the Guide) or 10th (per the Courant) with 542 assists, she's moving up. She needs 117 to tie Moriah for #1. I thought during last season that Crystal would pass 659 fairly easily, but her assist totals are down this year. She needs to average about 6 apg for the rest of the year to catch Mo. Will she?

Probably not, as her role has changed and Geno needs her to score.

Just checked. Crystal has had only 2 games with 6 assists and one with 8 this season so the chances her averaging six a game from here on out aren’t good.

Crystal averaged 5.9 apg last year and had 225 assists, second all-time behind the great Sue Bird. Without Lou and Phee in the lineup this year, she is averaging 4.1 apg this year. At her current pace, she should finish ahead of Sue (who missed 25 or so games as a freshman) and wind up between 3rd and 5th, roughly matching the totals of Renee and Jen, but behind Moriah and Diana.

In some respects, she reminds me of Colorado’s all time assists leader, Kennedy Leonard, who finished her career last year with 664 assists in spite of missing 14 games due to injury as a senior but who was also a prolific scorer when called upon to do so. She’s playing in Germany now.
