UConn signee Dangerfield, recruiting target Walker make U.S. U-18 team

Other than the inaugural squad in 1988 there has been a future UConn women's basketball player on every U-18 national team. That streak will continue as incoming freshman guard Crystal Dangerfield was one of 12 players named to the squad competing in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship from July 13-17 in Chile.

UConn recruiting target Megan Walker also was named to the squad as her Sidney Cooks and Amber Ramirez, who will team with Walker and Cal incoming freshman Jaelyn Brown on the team representing the U.S. at the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championship which begin on Wednesday in Kazakhstan.

Rebecca Lobo was the player with UConn ties to play for the U18 team, helping the U.S. to the silver medal in between her freshman and sophomore seasons at Connecticut. Four years later Stacy Hansmeyer was a member of second-place U.S. team. In 2000 Ashley Battle and Diana Taurasi helped the U.S. win the first of seven straight gold medals in the event. Charde Houston in 2004, Tina Charles and Maya Moore in 2006, Kelly Faris in 2007, Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley in 2010, Moriah Jefferson, Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck in 2012 and Napheesa Collier in 2014 as won gold medals at the FIBA Americas 18 event.

You know that's right! Go Lil CD!(officially her unofficial nickname)

This is a good team... Kushkituah apparently just missed the cut for the final 18 players on the U17 and was bumped to tryouts for U18 team and again just missed the cut. So it appears she had a much stronger showing than last year where she got lost in the fray.

It was mentioned in a another thread here that 2017's had a poor showing for U17 tryouts but the U18 team is mostly made up of 2017's. Cooks is going to be a great post player IMO.

Not quite 'mostly' but five of the U18 team are 2017. It does appear though that 2017 may be a less deep HS class than 2016 or 2018. It happens sometimes.

The 2017 players on the U18 team are there because of age restrictions, just like Napheesa Collier played on the U18 team two years ago and the U19 last year. That is why Megan Walker wasn't on the U16 team last year; she was too old to qualify and too young to make the U19 team. That rotation of U17-U18 against U16-U19 virtually insures the likelihood of an inexperienced U18 squad, but every other country also has the same circumstances.

I remember birthday cut-offs made for interesting club team makeups in soccer, as well, as this one. Just noticed that Evina Westbrook, the #2 rated (Hoopgurlz) player is also on the team. Will be interesting to see how the Oregon-based Westbrook and Va.-based Walker play together. Of course, Ms. Dangerfield will probably be distributing both of them the ball.....:D;)
