It's a pretty good article, though Creme makes the usual mistake of thinking SC-Stanford is the biggest game of the weekend. It will be interesting to see how they measure up against each other -- our first chance to do so. But the result is very likely to be utterly inconsequential. Other games that seem rather more consequential to me:

Texas-Marquette -- there's a lot to learn about all sorts of things from this game

UCLA-SD St -- this is a chance to really see if UCLA is for real

Tennessee-Rutgers -- will Tennessee be able to right the ship. A loss here would have to knock them out the top 25

Louisville Gonzaga -- this is a mismatch, but the Zags have some excellent guard play, which means Louisville and Van Lith will get a test.

And of course, UConn-NC St, which could have important consequences for both teams.

The usual mistake? In the common parlance a 1 vs. 2 matchup is by definition as big as a game comes.

Maybe for you UCLA-South Dakota State is more interesting or consequential, but that doesn't render his statement a mistake.

You are exactly right, of course. And yet, somehow it feels like everyone has already discounted this game, as if to say "What difference will it make?" And I am a little peculiar in my tastes, I guess.

Right now, at this moment in November, before either team has had a chance to gel, I can't help thinking this game won't reveal much about either team. If it had come in January, then it would be earth-shaking (lol) in it's repercussions, maybe even cataclysmic. But don't get me wrong, I'll be watching it.

Where are you getting the impression that "everyone has already discounted this game"? Just curious. I haven't seen anyone else, much less everyone, say or imply that the game doesn't matter.

Don't see this as a mismatch. Is Louisville favoured? Yes, but considering the challenges the bigs had with Belmont last weekend, the front court match up could be interesting as well.

Yvonne Ejim may provide some challenges for Cochran and Dixon. She was the 6th woman of the year for the WCC conference last season. She plays bigger than the 6'1" she's listed at. She continues to improve each season and is currently averaging 20 points a game.

Mr. Crêmê did mention the UConn- NC State game in a couple of wordy disquisitions about other teams, but he did NOT list it as one of the key matchups. Look at his list of Saturday and Sunday games. You will not find UConn-NC State.

Guess ol' Charlie is preoccupied with where to put Iowa in the next exciting episode of Buuurrrrrrakittologee. Don't touch that dial!

Did I get a false impression? I seem to recall numerous people speculating that a win or a loss for either team is not going to move the rankings. That's all I meant when I said "it feels like...". Perhaps you mean that a move in the rankings isn't the best gauge of the importance of the game, and that seems fair to me.

I expect it to be an exciting game to watch, and I'll be watching it instead of whatever dull game the NFL has on offer -- where I am it's always either Broncos or Cardinals, neither of which have been thrilling this year.

As far as I can see, there are three possibilities for this game, one or the other team wins closely, or there's a blow out. I'm kinda expecting the third as a result. This ought to have the biggest effect on the rankings, but is probably not likely to.
