Creighton's Next HC Transition

McD wants to hit the golf course and enjoy his condo in Fountain Hills AZ. But first he wants one more run at the mythical (to Creighton) F4.
I’m guessing 2 years, definitely from 1-3.
Huss was chosen because he is a master of portal recruiting and has strong international recruiting ties as well as AAU ties, Great choice for the money bag era. He can develop players. Likes the McD offense. Is lacking at x-and-o strategy.

Not sure why a school bothers with a coach in waiting in the transfer portal era unless they think this Huss guy is definitely their choice and they want to lock him in.

It’s silly.

McDermott is like 60…unless they think he’s got feelers out to move on, what are they doing?

Feels like they just bid against themselves to get a coach no one was really dying to snap up. Feels panicky.

The rumor in Omaha was always not that he would leave town for the Big Ten, but that if ASU ever opened he would bolt to get the golf in. A son of his son has made a ton of money in the NBA, his daughter is out of college now, he sold one of his houses in town a month ago, word is the lake house is on the market. I think he is making one or two more swings at it then calling it and enjoying the easy life.

Also Huss could have easily stayed at High Point, they are committed with both facilities and some real NIL for that level of play. I don't see how he walks away from winning there and a major conference offer job offer to follow in a year or two without some pretty major assurances that this isn't a long term horizon.

Who knows if this works, but it does feel like the transition is happening pretty soon and I am very happy to have Huss back in the fold.

I'm going to assume that McD and Huss agreed to this arrangement before taking it to the higher ups. Either way, this is a strange arrangement to leave for an assistant coaching job for an indefinite time as coach in waiting.

Under McDermott's tutelage he will qualify for a D1 coaching job much sooner, even if McD prolongs his leaving or stays indefinitely. It could be a better opportunity for Huss beyond Creighton.

This seems like a better thought out transition than Syracuse (or us with Ollie). It isn't the lifetime assistant being promoted. It's a guy that already had a couple successful years at a lower level (1st NCAA tournament appearance for the school). But while I'm sure Creighton is nice, it can't compete with the High Point dorms that I see on social media.
We got a national championship and a conference tournament. Ours was the best regardless of how it ended. Ollie was on Calhouns staff for years prior to taking over.

No more talk bc some people get sassy over Ollie. Don’t want to derail the thread but it had to be said

Hopefully the HC isn't spending much time in the dorms.....that's reserved for the FL coach!
My "friend", the Florida superfan, told me that while he doesn't care for Dan Hurley's antics he respects his coaching ability. That was a few weeks after Golden Boy was cleared of the charges so I took advantage of the timing to tell him I don't care for some of the antics either but, at least so far as we know, he hasn't sent any photos of "Junior" to multiple coeds.

Then I asked him how his coach got off. Was it lack of evidence because the photos disappeared or did they find multiple coeds made it all up. Never got an answer.

It's possible he's told AD that he's looking to retire in 2-3 years. Lots of guys do it and don't want to be working at 60+. I have friends that retired at 45-55.

If AD is concerned another good 1-2 years and their guy gets P4 HC job and isn't avail, it makes some sense.

Everyone here knew McD was not coaching like Slick Rick or Calhoun. In fact a lot of us were afraid the shoe would eventually just drop and then bang, we’d be out of a coach.

I get why people here are puzzled (especially with the Ollie move and how that went) but it’s mostly because you’re not on this side of the fence. This is pretty much exactly the way a lot of us here would like it to have gone.

It’s the opposite of panicky, it’s both who we want and more or less how we’d want things to go.

It seems like a great plan for McDermott and for Creighton. He's done an incredible job there and he is leaving you guys with a top 20 program whenever he decides to hang it up and you'll be getting a guy taking over who has won on his own and knows the Creighton way. There's no reason to go through the grind into your 70's. He'll probably be 63 by the time he retires. He has tons of money to do whatever he wants for the rest of his life.

I suspect we'll see a lot of coaches getting out of coaching in their 50's now. They make a ton of money and it's more of a grind now than it used to be. Get out and enjoy your money.

That's the smart way to do it. Look at Syracuse and how they mismanaged their transition, mainly cause Boeheim wasn't ready to leave, but Hopkins wanted the job and would have allowed for some stability.

Huss is a proven commodity. He should do well at Creighton

Creighton is a decent job. They clearly have a solid payroll and a coach can be successful there. There was going to be interest in that job when McDermott retires. If Huss is their dream coach, then congratulations, I guess.
