Creighton Postgame thread [Merged]

Some thoughts on the Creighton game:

• Like all Husky fans, I was really concerned to be facing a solid Creighton team, on the road, with only 7 players suited up. The first half was a pleasure to watch as the Huskies outscored the Blue Jays by 19, holding them to 16 pts on 15% shooting, while outrebounding Creighton 31–19. The second half was more of the same
• As expected, UConn’s BIGS lead the way. Dorka had a double-double at the half and Aaliyah wasn’t far behind. Dorka and Aaliyah both had monster games tonight, never permitting Creighton to feel as if they were in the game.
• After Nika buried the first trey of the game, UConn missed their next 7 x 3-point shots until Caroline finally knocked down another trey at the start of the second half. Not to worry. Creighton shot an abysmal 3-27 from the arc, the result of some pretty good UConn defense and a lot of just plain bad Creighton shooting
• We all love Nika’s take no prisoners style of play, but I really would prefer to see her protect her body just a little. She hit the floor hard with her head, diving after a loose ball that she had very little chance of coming up with. I know, she wouldn't be Nika if she backed off, even a little.
• Very happy to get away with a surprisingly comfortable win tonight. Looking forward to the team getting healthy SOON!!!

 

[Redux]

Creighton didn’t show up; UConn battled their own fatigue and won.

That’s somewhat facile. Creighton couldn’t get shots to fall, but they played aggressively enough to make UConn work continually, and UConn did not succumb. They could have coasted and still maybe kept the game under control but they worked admirably hard to the very end.

Turnovers were below their average so that's a plus. As Geno said, the back court looked a little tired and just a bit off offensively but they sure put in the effort on the defensive end. And everyone seems to be banged up to some degree right now. Even the bench is beat up.

Terrific effort by Dorka and Aailyah. Gritty effort from the rest. You're up 30 in the 3rd Q - put Inez in and let her get some valuable minutes, especially when you only have 7 players. Then again, what the heck do I know!

Just to post this lame post?

It's not all that terrible as an accurate, ultra-brief analysis. Basketball is a very complicated game so short is always going to be wanting. Even our long answers rarely go deep enough. You could do a single-space typed page each on Edwards and Dorka and not even get started.

I was very pleased with the gutsy performance. AE and DJ were MONSTERS!

Still a few more turnovers than I would like, but was good until 4th quarter.

We actually guarded the 3 line a bit. Creighton was horrible tonight.

Got banged up a bit. Ice packs on heads, Nika bouncing her head off floor, etc.

Patterson. Oh man, poor kid. Just can’t buy a bucket.

On to Marquette!

The officials decided early on they were gonna let a lot go in this game. It worked for and against UConn. There wasn’t any foul trouble, but a lot of players took some shots.

My heart sank when Caroline left the game rubbing her temples and then was shown with an ice pack on the side of her head. I hope she’s okay.

I was surprised at the margin of victory, but the fact is, Creighton just doesn't have the height to go up against a team with tall players. Of course, it helps that Dorka and Aaliyah played their hearts out in this game.

Random thoughts:
UConn also stayed enough out of foul trouble to win easily.

I cannot remember so many close no-baskets as Creighton suffered tonight.

I worry when I see Caroline go to the bench at the end with an ice pack against the side of her head. What is that all about?

A discombobulated blowout -- I'm not really surprised for a first-game-back-short-handed game.

The girls did what everyone (I exaggerate) has been calling for -- they defended the perimeter and as a result, Creighton shot poorly. But it didn't hurt that we had a huge size advantage, and that both our posts have become wizards under the rim.

I thought Caroline had a solid game defensively and with a little luck could have scored more. I think she's continuing to get her game back.

We just had a better game plan. They had no ability to stop our bigs.

Liv dominated them last year at Omaha, and she didn't have the benefit of the new Aaliyah next to her as Dorka did this evening. I don't mean to take anything away from Dorka. She and Aaliyah were awesome! I just like remembering Liv's great moments for context. Dorka played up to the standard Liv left, and so did Aaliyah.

I was concerned about playing Creighton, I think they are ranked 21st, and UConn playing without Fudd/Griffin.. Dorka and Aaliyah were great, Nika was her usual upbeat player and our defense was really good.
Lou had trouble finding the basket, plus she was guarded well/when Azzi returns it will help Lou's offensive game.
Caroline hustle and showed sign of getting better.

It's been a while since I've seen an entire team of faces, including the staff, just dejected by the play of UCONN. Trust me Creighton packed this one in early.

Creighton is a battle tested team that went to the Elite Eight last season. I'm not surprised UCONN beat them, but it was unexpected to see Creighton so intimidated & demoralized. Their coach tried to address their lack of emotion, but they just never responded.

Dorka was really great. She played so big. Caught passes in traffic, really tried to finish through contact. She hasn't really found her touch from outside but it doesnt really matter. All American Aaliyah was great as well.
I thought Lou and Caroline got good looks but couldn't convert. But the fact that they both had double figures is a good sign imo.
This was just about as impressive as the Duke win. this was a classic UConn win. dominated a ranked team on the road with seven players, down their best (2 really). I don't think other programs do stuff like this.

You hit it on the head. Plus, I think Creighton's effort to face guard Lou made it easier for Aaliyah and Dorka in the paint. Nika hit her first 3, and it felt like that set the tone for the rest of the game -- not that we'd hit our outside shots, but that they'd have to guard the perimeter, and Dorka and Aaliyah feasted.
