This is interesting. Let's play this out. We have a new Pres and a new AD. While outwardly expressing admiration, both are concerned about having to deal with the clout of JC, especially when it comes to his desire to "name" his replacement. They don't like that at all. So now here comes the tarnish from the postseason penalties. Say what you will, it weakens JC. The ban embarrases the University just when Herbst is trying to raise its image and endowment. He's in no position to be demanding about anything. In the midst of all this, they persuade JC to retire and hold a real search for his replacement. The postseason ban allows new coach the luxury of playing with less pressure coming in. The program gets rebuilt (along with a new practice facility) and voila, we're back with a new shiny program headed nowhere but up. Farfetched?

This isn't a huge surprise. What we've always been banking on is an entirely separate decision: whether to use the most recent two years (2010-11 and 2011-12) instead of 2009-10 and 2010-11.

If they decide to use the most recent data, we'll be eligible. If they stick with the older data, we're screwed.

Unfortunately, the media have seized the debate so that if we become eligible (regardless of whether it's by something as impartial and fair as using the most recent data), it'll be viewed as the NCAA submitting to a big-name program and lacking a backbone. Sadly, I think the NCAA recognizes this and wants to avoid the PR disaster, so I don't expect them to make us eligible by using the latest data either.
