Interesting point of reference regarding timing of coaching hires...

Fixed typo in title from original article. http://footballscoop.com/news/11638-could-a-change-in-hiring-cycles-could-be-coming

>> Announced in late October, the NCAA has expanded the winter dead period, on both the front and back end. This year's dead period has grown from Dec. 23-Jan. 3 to Dec. 16-Jan. 15. A 12-day respite has transformed into what's now a 32-day hibernation.

A ripple effect of expanding the dead period means that the business of coaching changes is about to change. Which way? It's too early to tell. Realistically, it could go one of two ways:

- Knowing that a new hire won't have meaningful interactions with recruits for more than a month, a school without a head coach on say, Dec. 9, could be patient and let the process play out a little bit longer rather than rush a hire simply to have a head coach in place. Or:

- Faced with the prospect of waiting until mid-January to introduce a new head coach just three weeks or so before national signing day, schools could rush even more to get a new head coach in place as early as possible.

There's really no way to know how this will play out and, truly, each opportunity to unique. But it seems safe to think that programs that have already taken the first step will have even more reason to move quickly, but this new, extended dead period might be just the cover that athletic directors were secretly looking for to allow them time to perform their due diligence and make a hire they have thoroughly and appropriately vetted.<<

All the more reason to have a coach in place by Dec. 9. Or even Dec. 8. Remember, Warde knew he was in the market Oct. 19 during the first half of the Cincinnati game.

Why was this change made? I can see the old dead period during the Christmas/Holiday season but what's going on from Jan 3 to Jan 15. The dead period seems to coincide with Bowl season, is it to not disadvantage the successful programs? Like they need it.

There isn't any doubt which way this will go.

Universities will hire coaches sooner.

The choice is between having a coach for three weeks before a month long dry spell or giving your opposition seven weeks of silence from the staff.

In what bizzaro world does any company voluntarily give their competition seven weeks of silence?

Yup... Done deal.

>>2) Coaches and football staff members are now prohibited from having in-person contact with recruits during all-star games. Contact will be barred from when the prospect arrives at the all-star game until he returns home from the game.

3) The winter dead period has been extended from the Monday of the week mid-year JuCo enrollees can sign a National Letter of Intent, and ends the Wednesday of the week of the AFCA Convention. For 2013-14, that means the dead period has been extended from Dec. 23-Jan. 3 to Dec. 16-Jan. 15. <<

Sadly, the one run by people who put SUNJ ahead of UConn

Assuming new coach in place by Dec. 9 or so will be interesting to see how many JUCOs if any he reels in

I wouldn't expect a coach to be named before the week of Dec 16. That would give Manuel a week after the Memphis game to conduct interviews with his final list. Could even be the week after.

One factor that lends itself to a quicker timetable is the regular season will be over for a few of the candidates (Lembo, Mulllen) on Nov. 30 although looks like Narduzzi will be in the B-10 championship game. Hopefully WM can knock out a few interviews before Dec. 7.

Whatever the cycle is, I have no faith in Warde's ability to get ahead of the curve.

I was reading about the new dead periods last week, and I was thinking about it yesterday when Ruskin gave Warde a 9 December suspense to hire a new coach.

So, I am thinking that if anything, this will frustrate the Ruskins of the world even more. We might hire a by 9 Dec, but he may not start coming to work until the first week of January. For example.. If we hired Herman, I doubt he will leave the tOSU before their BCS Bowl game, so really I think this will degrade some of the urgency and probably give Warde the time and space to exercise some tactical patience should he need to.

Isn't it common practice for coordinators who get head coaching jobs to 1) stay with the team through the bowl and 2) get a week before the 2 weeks of bowl prep to get set up in their new job to recruit? The Steve Sarkisian example comes to mind first (BTW, note date of hire -- Dec. 8).

Now that the Dec.-Jan. dead period is much longer it seems almost imperative to have a guy here Dec. 9. And if he's wearing a UConn shirt but talking about how he's excited to be coaching in the (Name Your Favorite) Bowl that in itself is a great recruiting pitch.

Head coaches are a differerent animal. Who knows if Ball State would let Lembo coach the Bowl? But let's say Mich State goes to the Rose Bowl? Narduzzi could be flying the UConn flag for a week and then put his Spartan hat for the next 2 1/2.

Worse than a nice cheap shot...sucky post WAQUOIT...Warde is working it now through agents and a new coach will be in place ASAP to get recruiting going. HOW ABOUT MORE POSITIVE? Season not great but at least
stay on the positive side. We won't be down for long.....................

Sucky post WAQUOIT..stay on the positive side

Not to worry. Waq's just a bit cranky. He's a little short on confidence for Warde but he knows once I whisper in Susan's ear all will be fine.

Cheap shot? Are you guys on drugs? It was a fair comment. This disaster of a year was totally predictable. All our AD did was rearrange the furniture. Not only did we lose a year, we've gone even deeper in the hole. Believe me, I hope he gets lucky and gets this hire right.
