They are picked to finish 8 out of the 10 team CAA. They don't have anyone selected to be on the All Conference team but their frontcourt is rated as the 3rd best in the CAA behind Northeastern and UNC Wilmington.
They return 3 starters from last years team that went 14-18 and have a new coach this year in Earl Grant who was an assistant under Gregg Marshall at Winthrop and Wichita St. There was a cloud of uncertainty with the program last year so chemistry and trust is something Grant wants to build and work on this year. Grant was named the head coach only 2 months prior to their first game so he hasn't had a ton of time to get to know his players.
Grants blueprint is built around defense and rebounding which can generate easy offense. He wants to create easy offense by getting up and down the floor while pushing and attacking. The half court offense is still a work in progress as Grant said he wants to create sets that will highlight his players strengths but it will take time to fully understand what his players strengths are.
Anthony Stitt and Adjehi Baru are returning starters and leaders of the team. Stitt led the team in assists last year but struggled shooting (35.4% from the field and 55.7% from FT line). Grant hopes transition basketball will help Stitt's FG%. Baru is a 6'9 forward who was CAA All Defensive team last year and shot 50% from the floor.
Joe Chealey and Canyon Barry, son of Rick Barry, will help out Stitt in the backcourt. Both were members of the CAA All Freshman team last year. Both have some size also with Chealey 6'3 and Barry a rangy 6'6. They also have a 6'4 freshman in Cameron Johnson who should get some playing time.
Up front they have plenty of size. They have a 7'2 265 lb junior center in David Wishon who had minimal impact last year 2.4 ppg and 2.7 rpg but is looking to get more PT. They also have a couple 6'7 forwards, Terrance O'Donahue will see time along with Donovan Gilmore. Nick harris is a 6'10 forward who might see time if there is fould trouble.
All in all CoC is a team trying to find its identity. New coach and system with limited time prior to the season to get to know his players and implement his system and schemes to fit the personnel.
