CO's officially announced leaving

Looks like they are withdrawing and not dissolving the BE. So UConn, Cinnci and USF keep the BE name. Wonder what they decided to do with the monies. This is about the best news any UConn supporter could hope for given what could have happened with the CO's announcement last week.

This is something that should have done back in 2003. They had another chance in 2008 after teams been together 5 years. I believe this is the best for all the teams involved.

We'll find out terms soon enough. I have to admit I was concerned they were going to do a DeFillip on the three remaining football teams. So now the new chapter for UConn officially begins.

Since they are withdrawing will they pay a 5m exit fee and forfeit future, post 2015, NCAA BB credits?

The long awaited schism is upon us. Agree it should have occured MUCH sooner. Likely that we'd still be in a league with WVa & those soon departing to the ACC. We might have even caught lightening in a bottle with the B-12 leftovers had the Pac-12 annexed Bevo, the Sooners & their leeches. Won't cry over what might have been. It's time to get to work & make this new conference as strong as possible. We're most likely here far a long while.

They probably won't get hit with that if they have chosen not to dissolve the BE. The big issue will be monies distribution, who gets the BE name and the right to MSG, and whether they still can block UConn from this years BE bb tournament.

Press conference at 4:30...SJU Pres. Rev. Harrington leading the way. Based on SJU fans' feelings about him. the hoops schools might want to be just a little worried.

Per McMurphy, no exit fees if they leave 6/30/2015.

Annnnnnd boom goes the dynamite.

If all of the reports from ~2004-2005 were correct, as long as they depart as a complete faction, there will be no exit fees and the football schools retain the NCAA credits they earned while the catholic schools retain the credits they earned.

Depending on what the remaining distribution there is on UConn's 2011 title run and UL's final four run last year, the few remaining football schools could be in for a nice chunk of change.

No exit fee, but since they're still in the conference, they get their NCAA credits and exit fee kitty.

I am assuming now that the only schools that can vote on policy matters regarding the BE are UConn, USF and Cincy.

Time to vote on whether schools like UConn can participate in the BE tourney--effective immediately.

After all, the rule was just instituted late last semester.

Credits are paid out over 6 years starting the year after the tournament. Only one of the 6 years has been paid out on Uconn Nat'l Championship. Total credits owed the BE in well in excess of $150M

Reaction from the league, and from UConn President Susan Herbst regarding the news that seven schools will be leaving the Big East.

From Commissioner Michael Aresco and the Big East Presidents:
The basketball institutions have notified us that they plan to withdraw from the Big East Conference. The membership recognizes their contributions over the long distinguished history of the Big East. The 13 members of the Conference are confident and united regarding our collective future. We have a strong Conference with respected national universities, and are working together to forge the future. We have a variety of options, and are looking forward with great partnership, collegiality and optimism.

From Herbst:
The tragedy that took place in Newtown on Friday should be the focus of the thoughts of the people in Connecticut and all Husky fans this weekend.

The University of Connecticut believes that the Big East Conference will continue to be a strong and exciting conference that is comprised of highly regarded national universities.

We ask our fans to steer all passion and concern to Newtown, and we will honor those lost when we gather together as a university community for events this upcoming week.

So, on a day of worldwide mourning these 7 boneheads announce the figurative death of a conference. Good work.

Susan Herbst said nothing, which is entirely appropriate today.

Memo to Big East Catholic schools: SHUT UP

Silence should have been golden today

As much as former UConn coach Jim Calhoun has been criticized for some of the things he has said and done, no one should have a problem with how Calhoun handled things on Friday as he was preparing to give a speech at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Just before Calhoun gave his speech, he was informed of what happened in Newtown. Calhoun immediately switched subjects and talked about children and how fragile things are in this life.
