In the wake of Nikki Moody's recently filed lawsuit, a number of current and former players have come forward in adamant defense of coach Bill Fennelly and his coaching style:

Today, however, another former player came forward with an account that would seem to corroborate parts of Moody's experience. Cheyenne Shepherd, now an attorney in Indiana, eloquently describes the dichotomy between the way Fennelly treated his "favorites" versus his "non-favorites":

to where, when you may not get released from the school... and you dont think she was :smart" enough to think of that?

This is pretty standard fare in any of these cases especially with long established coaches, and it is important to realize that as the second player states, everyone can be telling the absolute truth as they perceived it.

It is an issue that our laws and courts struggle with - hostile work environment and harassment or discrimination of any kind can be a very personal perception and many of our laws are now written to recognize that. It creates a huge grey area in the management of any group and can be extreme in a sports environment where skills, skills development and temperament is unique to every player within a team environment and performance is measured and critique received minute by minute and where the limits of performance are constantly being pushed.

This is one reason why Connie Yori receives a large buy-out and should Duke choose to part ways with JPM she will as well - there is no clear answer. The situations like LaTech are rare where the violation is so egregious, or Loyola where the preponderance of evidence appears to be so one-sided.

Coaches showing favorites is as old as there have been players and coaches. Most coaches try desperately to not show favorites, but humans show favorites and coaches ALL are human. I have no doubt that Boneyard Bloggers could list a number of players, over the year, that have been Geno's favorites. Court may not accept the truth of Favorites, but fans will.
The world has turned many cycles since Coaches had the luxury (if it can be called that) of running their practices and game plans and subbing without regard to anyone's feelings, images, conceptions, etc. Those that can do that are in a wonderful state of complacency. The world we NOW live in --every one has access to an attorney and there are way too many people to tell players how badly they have been treated and the money to be made if they choose to sue--most often without ever having to appear in court or face those accused!!
If the trend on suing becomes the norm will anyone be willing to be a coach or will every coach have written into their contract that the universities shall provide financial and legal protection for any and all offenses as related to the job?? Will this end College sports??

Discrimination has been with humans from the beginning. Discrimination is not a DIRTY word.
We all discriminate and we do it continuously. We pick and choose by discrimination. Pick our friends, avoid those we discriminate against (don't like), Humans have survived by being discriminatory.

I wish there was a less functional word chosen to describe bad treatment of other.
