Why does high school basketball start later in Connecticut than everywhere else in the country?

They've already been playing for a month out here in Illinois and CT is still at least a week away.

I think it has to do with the high school football/fall sports schedule. When my son played, tryouts didn't start until football regular season (Thanksgiving day game) was done. Lots of kids that play basketball also play football.

And our football season goes longer because we start school later.

But every state plays football and many of them are more serious and better than Connecticut at it.

Boys basketball in Indiana where I teach just started playing actual in season games last week.

Football state finals games were played over Thanksgiving weekend at Lucas Oil. Pretty cool experience for those that reach it.

My HS played in Lucas Oil this year on a Friday night. We are getting a new stadium with turf, bleachers, concessions, video board, etc so we have not had a home game this year. I think that is why we ended up playing there once this year.

Texas bb games started mid Nov, still 2 weeks left of fb playoffs. All 12 championship games will be played at AT&T stadium (Jerry World)

I feel like it's a northeast thing. Mass and CT have both started practice on the Monday after Thanksgiving since the dawn of time. Don't know the reason, but does it really matter?

Wow. Nothing like that out here. They had the state championships a week ago at Northern Illinois stadium which seats 29,000.

Mount Carmel was the best team in the state and they're considered the most talented team ever in Chicagoland, 9 players are going to go Big 10/SEC/Notre Dame.

Connecticut seems so behind the times when it comes to high school basketball and football.

A few years back, my high school played in the state natty at Willowbrook in New Britain. That's about the same as Lucas Oil or Texas Stadium or whatever it's called, right? It might hold 10,000?

Finals are at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford this year

Just a different animal. CT = Houston in population. CT kids are more prone to 2 sports, even 3, with hoops, football ans baseball. It is a calendar deal imho

Wait a second. There's different kinds of hihh school football in CT. There's the CIAC and then there's the prep schools. The prep schools in CT have just as many kids go D1 than alot of schools across the nation.

In Massachusetts the first games are this week and the regular season ends around February 18. How late does the season go in Illinois?

I don't know when the regular season ends but the state championship games in Illinois are the same weekend as Connecticut, second weekend of March.

Football ends later in CT because playoffs don’t start after the traditional Thanksgiving day games.

That's a matter of a week, and some of these states have been practicing since early November.

Who knows what the reason was, but I doubt that the current justification is anything more than "that's what we've always done", it being Connecticut . . .
