Defense can be used as a verb, though, as stupid as it sounds out loud. It's not often used, but the OED uses it.

It sounds stupid. If I heard it (I don't really recall it), it would annoy me. But it doesn't mean it is ungrammatical.

Maybe SUcks should just try playing defense.

That might be the issue. Boeheim isn't annunciating the word correctly, so all they do is stand in five locations on the court regardless of what the offense is doing.
