"You can never back down. Once you do, people look at you different. You had to stand up for everything you believe in. Even if it's only playing basketball. If somebody took the gloves off and wanted to go, you had to go. If you didn't, there's no use playing." - Larry Bird.
Found this while tooling around youtube today at lunch. Great clip on Larry Legend. Made me think of Ray, and how he talked about completely expecting to hit that 3 against the Spurs in Game 6. Totally different personality on the court, but Ray Allen is where he is on the NBA career spectrum, and the most clutch shooter since Bird, because he has the same approach to practice that Larry had.
Different sport, different era. Same spirit. Winning doesn't come from talent alone, it comes from talent and endless hours of tireless work. Practice with coaches isn't enough. It's the 700-800 reps a day that you do on your own on top of it. Trash talk, is only good, if you can back it up. Story about Larry and Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson at the LA Forum and McHale and Elvin Hayes here are awesome. Completely forgot about the left handed game against Portland. Unbelievable.
Nobody intimidated with his words, backed up by his actions, like Larry Bird.
BIll Parcells locker room laboratory - every laboratory needs to have a common interest of: Working Toward the Greater Good, you need Accountability, you need Enthusiasm, Energy and Heart, you need Law and Order, and you need Confidence.
I wonder who the players are for the UCONN 2013 football team. Talked about energy, enthusiasm and heart last week. Confidence this week. We're going to need everyone of those leaders in that locker room to step up.
Confidence comes from endless, endless hours of practice.
