Yes, I admit it. I'm an arrogant Uconn fan.

First, let's define arrogant.

Arrogant - Definition from the Free Merriam-Webster ...

having or showing the insulting attitude of people who believe that they are better , smarter, or more important than other people.

Ok...that doesn't work. I don't believe that at all. But I do believe that about the Uconn basketball program. So, as a fan, that makes me arrogant. They are better and smarter than other programs. More important? To me they are..lol.

So, as the expression goes, if you can back it up, it ain't arrogance.

Let's back it up.

Over the last 14 years they have won 7 NC's and everyone else has won 7.
Over the last 6 years they have been to every Final four.
Over the last 14 years they have been to 11 final fours.
Over the last 14 years they have had 3 undefeated seasons and 2 seasons with one loss.
Over the last 14 years they have a record of 482 and 38. An average of 34.2 wins and 2.7 losses per year.

Nine Olympians
Seven National Players of the year
Thirteen first team AA's

I'm sure there are more reasons, but sheesh, with all that going on plus for this season....

3 AA's, 4 preseason Wooden Award nominees

And of course, the best active coaching and coaching staff in the country.

Arrogance? Maybe. Don't really care. Just feel really fortunate that I have such a great program to root for and a great bunch of fans to share it with.

Let me re-phrase a favorite line from a different message board/different sport.

"There are some who consider basketball to be a matter of life or death. Here on the Boneyard we consider it much more important."

"Best active coaching staff?" You gotta be kidding. Down at Baylor they have a coach who rips off her jacket and other attire whenever there's an unfavorable call. At Louisville they have a coach whose shirts are the definition of active. The Sooners' coach has that very active hair, and even somewhat staid Muffet is apparently an active fashion plate these days from what I've reading.

Face it, Geno in his latter years has mellowed and can really just work up a decent scowl and finger run through the scalp.

You have the right stat at the top of the list...7 national championships in 14 years! I had not realized that until it was told to me sometime around 5 minutes left in the Louisville game. It's almost incomprehensible. Was it Rodney Dangerfield who said: "When you got it flaunt it baby!"

You are kidding! Was it the Maryland game where Kelly got absolutely clocked on an attempted layup and Geno did one of his all time great "You gotta be duck*ing *ting me Ref!!!" body language boggies about 3/4 the length of the court. CD blocked him and he sprinted to the ref on the other end an said #@$%&#$@! and finally drew the technical. Classic.

I agree with your sentiment - and funny comment about Kim... but...

I'd say the best coaching staff period. Sure Pat has more wins, but that was over about 50 years (exaggeration). Geno has accomplished more in less time, on every conceivable statistic.

Hall of Fame coach that also happens to be a two time Olympic Coach.
Geno is 839-133 in 28 years - an average of 30-5, although 45 of those losses came before 1990. The last time Geno coached a team with double digit losses is during the 1992-93 season.

A Stat I would add is that UConn is 8-0 in games that decided the National Championship.

I believe you are thinking of "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up". A Dizzy Dean quote, who just happened to be a St Louis Cardinal. Just sayin'. :D

This ain't a confession, man, this is fact. I saw the topic and hoped for something juicy! Now spill!!! :p

To be precise, it was in 1934. Before the season, he predicted/promised that "Me and [younger brother] Paul will win 40 games." He was widely criticized for his shameless boasting. His response? Just as you recalled: "It ain't braggin' if you can back it up.'"

And did he ever back it up! Faithful to his word(s), Dizzy won 29 games and Paul won 20. Total, 49.

Just for goood measure, they each won 2 vs. Detroit in the World Series. (What a competitor -- in one pivotol game, St. Louis Manager Frank Frisch actually used Diz as a pinch runner!)

Critics were silenced. And how!

Ah yes, part of the Gashouse Gang. He actually got himself knocked out during that pinch running by getting hit in the head breaking up a double play. He was taken to the hospital for X-rays. Supposedly the headline in the paper the next day was "X-ray of Dean's head reveals nothing".

One more footnote about Dizzy Dean. His salary in 1934 was $7,500. For having won 29 games that year (plus 2 as the Cardinals won the World Series), he got a raise in 1935 to $17,500 plus another $1,000 bonus, presumably for his WS heroics.

In today's baseball finances, we could simply add a comma and three zeroes to all those numbers.
