While compiling the stats of the Wooden Watch list (subsequent post coming), I got thinking about the Conference POY leaders and here’s my list of the leader and the runner-up:
AAC-Meg Walker; Christyn Williams
ACC-Dana Evans Lou; Elisa Cunene NC St
Big 12-NaLyssa Smith Baylor; Taylor Robertson Ok/Ashley Joens Iowa St
BigTen- Ali Patberg IN; cast of others
PAC12- Mikayla Pivec OSU; Aari McDonald AZ/Ionescu Oregon
SEC- Rhyne Howard KY; Aliyah Boston SC

Based on stats and team success is my logic. The conference season has just started so a lot more results will shift the stats and the narrative.
Of note is comparing Pivec stats to Ionescu,McDonald, Onyenwere and Hebard and Mikayla means more than Sabrina does to her team. It’s close but I give the edge to Pivec. McDonald also gets the edge over Sabrina thus far as she has been unstoppable for Arizona and has lead them to a top 25 ranking with significantly less support sans Reese.
What say you fellow BYers? Please only give realistic POY names not “also considered” like a Satou Sabally (great player, not winning POY). Same for Slocum, she’s not winning POY.

If the award is given for performance in conference play and not the season as a whole, I think Lauren Cox is the favorite in the Big 12. Smith may end up with flashier numbers, but I think most understand that Cox is the key to the team's success this year.

Use the numbers this far, not the expected

If Carolina goes undefeated in the SEC, Boston should be POY. She's only playing 23 minutes a game due to how quickly most get out of hand, while Kentucky player is playing over 30.

Boston's per 30 numbers are 17.2, 11.4, and 4.1 blocks, and she has a positive A/TO ratio as a FR post.

I think Guirantes, Doyle, Patberg and Pulliam are the front-runners.

They already lost two games in the ACC.

Since it's conference games only, I think Kiana Williams from Stanford is in the thick of it for the Pac 12. She struggled much off OOC but she's playing much better now.

BigTen- Ali Patberg IN; cast of others

If Ali Patberg is all you could come up with in the Big Ten, let me help you out.

Using this chart and noting that Doyle co-leads the conference in apg at 5.2 ... and also noting Doyle has been awarded Big Ten player of the week twice (to none for Patberg), my choice at the moment would be Kathleen Doyle. I’m still thinking it could be Kaila Charles at the end of the season. She’s a beast.

Arella Guirantes has also been player of the week twice, and been on honorable mention at least twice.

First and foremost, leading a winning team is my first thought, scoring on a losing team is nice but obviously the other team wasn't so concerned as they won the game so unless Penn State and others can extract themselves from the lower depths of their conference, I mostly look at the top teams in each conference. I think my preference for Ali is that Indiana is far exceeding expectations thus far this year. I do think Doyle is a worthy candidate. I guess I need to see Rutgers perform more for me to get behind Guirantes as their best win so far is against Georgia Tech. After they play Michigan, Maryland and Ohio State and Iowa, the better Big10 teams, then I can assess how good she really is. So yes, anything anyone on Rutgers does, for the mere fact they play for CVS, I find suspect until proven otherwise.
I also thought about Pulliam at Northwestern but they too need to keep winning. Here's my assessment of the 5 Big10 players under consideration with more comprehensive stats than scoring.

I think this is one of the more interesting POY votes.

For arguments sake, I did the same analysis of the PAC12 which has some pretty good players besides Sabrina. Again, I only looked at the top teams and struggled to see who on ASU was worthy in the POY discussion but honestly, no one from that team has stats that measure up to warrant. That shows how balanced that team is. Good job by CTT.
With the stats shown, Pivec carries a big load on her shoulders especially for a guard on a lower scoring team. Maybe Aari should take less 3 pt shots...

She hit a decent .330 her Fr. year at Washington. While the rest of her game has exploded since then, her 3 point shot has been suspect since moving to Tucson. Only .281 last year and all the way down to .259 this season. I really thought she would improve that in the off season, it's the major hole in her game.

Oregon State's page is showing different stats than you've got, Pivec leading them at 15.3 ppg and Slocum at 14.4. The shooting #'s jive.

I was stumping for K. Williams earlier, but probably Lexie Hull should be at least a long shot candidate at this point. She is leading Stanford in scoring and rebounding and does a bit of everything for them.

After Arizona just went thru an 0-3 stretch against UCLA, OSU and UO, McDonald is probably way behind in the POY race despite her scoring numbers. They've gotta beat some of the top tier teams for her to be able to lay claim to any hardware.

I went to their page earlier today so maybe it was missing yesterday’s game when I looked. At a bar now ready for Clemson to beat LSU so I will look when I get home. I rechecked and the data I had, showed the 16 games (15-1) so maybe check your data. FYI, I too thought Kiana Williams deserves a look though that Stanford team relies on no one in particular except maybe Carrington who’s been hurt.

Shouldn’t only conference stats be used for conference player of the year?

Consider this a "working thread" that as more data comes in, it can be revised and talked about as only about 25% of the conference schedule has been played.

It'll be very interesting to see who wins the FOTY awards as well:
Pac-12: Haley Jones or Taylor Jones (both have already won three awards)
SEC: Aliyah Boston
Big 12: Ayoka Lee (Can RS FR win?)
ACC: Anaya People or Malu Tshitenge, probably some others too.
Big 10:???Holmes from Indiana, Owusu, Bell?

Pac-12: Agreed. I haven't seen them play but their stats are good: Curious if anyone has seen either Alissa Pili (Southern California) or Lola Pendande (Utah) play?
Big 12: Alexis Tucker (Texas Tech) has won a few FOTW as well and I think Longhorn fans would mention another name.
ACC: Sam Brunelle (Notre Dame) if she improves her shooting should win.

Non Power 5:
Big East: Madison Siegrist (Villanova) one of the best Freshman in the country.
AAC: A couple of Huskies still in the running mainly because everyone is underwhelming.

I only saw Pendande against OSU, and she was a complete non factor. Pili has had some big games but USC is winless in conference. I can't see either really being a contender at this point.

I think either of the Jones' will win but was curious how important team success was in winning FOTY.

In 2015-16 Cal finished 10th in Pac-12 conference with a 4-14 record when Kristine Anigwe won.

If one Fr. is truly head and shoulders above the rest, it's understandable they'll win even if their team isn't among the contenders. Stats aren't everything, but no one is really separating from the rest in that dept., so it might come down to team success.

Pili certainly had herself a big game last night. So did Brynna Maxwell from Utah.

For comparison the POTY.

Only 2 players have won outside the Top 3 teams.
  • In 1993-94 UCLA finished 5th in Pac-10 conference with a 10-8 record when Natalie Williams won.
  • In 2000-01 OSU finished Tied 6th in Pac-10 conference with a 8-10 record when Felicia Ragland won.

For the SEC (and I look at stats that are responsible for team success) I think A Boston is the clear leader for FOY. She is very talented but is playing a role not carrying her team. However for POY I think it is currently R Howard as she is clearly carrying Kentucky to their current record. C Carter is similarly carrying Texas A&M but is obviously hurt.
