Colorado State is expected to make UConn coach Jim Mora the school’s next head coach.

Mora, who expressed confidence this will be his “last step” in coaching

Heard that one before

And apparently he also took the opportunity to talk with many of UConn's commits, how wonderful is that?
I read that as CSU commits:

“Mora will return to Fort Collins for signing day.

“I’ve had an opportunity to talk to every one of the commits,” he said.”

Yes @huskymedic, I read it that way too (that he spoke with CSU recruits). Note that my sarcasm suggests that he spoke to OUR commits and got them to flip. I have a doctoral degree from UConn mate, I can read very much goodly. ^_^

Well, you’ve been raging quite a bit on the departure - I apologize for not effectively sifting out when it’s sarcasm. 😉

I'm in good company in that regard. Most of us here love this school, though I'd argue that we on the football threads have the health and prosperity of the athletics and the school front and center more than the BBall diehards. Having seen us take tremendous strides forward over the last 2 years, I'm very concerned that we're about to take several disastrous steps backwards to the point where we don't recover...I don't want a repeat of the 2010s. Besides which, if you think I'm raging, have you seen the videos of Ole Miss fans at the airport flipping off their former HC? I'm mild by comparison and just use my middle finger to type. 😁😇

He got out of a 9 win program near its peak and took over a 2 win program.

If he didn't leave now and we went 5-7 next year he'd be stuck in Storrs -- where he apparently didn't want to be -- for who knows how long.

Some folks were ready to build statues of him here and they'll be wiling to do the same at Colorado State if he can right the ship.
Hmmm... We'll see...

But I think we have to be careful with the Peak talk....

Who did we beat w/ Mora? Any top 25 teams?

I mean I think Diacco led us to a couple of bigger wins if you look at the Houston game.

But with Mora and thanks to him. we entered the national conversation...

Sorry but no one cares about Colorado St. They don't now and they won't in a couple of years.

Wasn't Liberty ranked when we beat them to secure bowl eligibility?

.-.
Yes, they (Liberty) were #19. UConn also beat Mountain West champion, Fresno State, who finished the year ranked in the 2022 season.
Other fairly substantial wins: UNC last year in the bowl; BC on the road & Duke who's in the ACC title game this season.
Mora did well at UConn but is not a great coach. That is pretty obvious since only job he landed was CSU. What he did well was able to use the portal to get players but I think we are giving him too much credit. UConn had more NIL than most of the teams on the schedule. Mora has wanted out of here since last season when he applied for the Washington State job but did not get it.

Good question, I do not know.

But the Houston game and close loss to ranked Tennessee, I saw things that I am not sure I saw when Mora was here.

I loved what Mora did but this idea that we are at some kind of a peak based our SOS while he was here?

Not me.

He did very good while he was here. But due to his celebrity maybe he got a bit more kudos than deserved.

100%. Vision guy, marketer, program builder. Not a great coach, but a pretty good one.

What Mora brought to UConn was a mature CEO head coach who embraced the current environment. His first 2 years, he didn't do a great job with his coordinators and how he managed the defense, but he hit a home run with Sammis and Brock was solid in year 1, but the defense suffered in year 2 after having to be completely rebuilt. (I blame the roster more than most.)

I think he learned after his first 2 years is that you have to have an offense that scores points and I think he will bring that philosophy to CSU. But, Mora is a defensive coach so hiring an OC will be critical to his success at CSU.

So you are saying he will be hiring Sammis? High probability Sammis is gone if he does not get head coaching job.

You are getting too hung up on this word.

I do not mean that this past season is the greatest season UConn will ever have. What I mean is we're losing Fagnano and Bell and, in the short term, Mora saw a likelihood that if he didn't get out now, his stock would fall. If he wanted out regardless, it's a no-brainer for him to leave after consecutive 9 win seasons.

When did we have a close loss to ranked Tennessee?

Might have been Missouri I I know we let one slip away against top 25 team. I still remember last drive that fizzled out - it was a great game - high quality opponent.

Yes it's the 2015 Missouri game (the fake, fake FG game) a dreadful 9-6 slog (Missouri blocked a punt for a safety & an extra point), in Diaco's one bowl season (the Houston game was in that year too), by the next year it was clear Diaco was done and he was fired. Missouri was ranked 22 at the time, primarily off the strength of their 2014 season and two low level wins (FCS and a 7 point win over Arkansas St); they'd finish the year 5-7 and actually played so poorly in that game that they fell 3 spots in the AP poll despite the win pushing them to 3-0.
