UConn's Samuelson, Collier Camping Team USA Style This Weekend

"The UConn women's basketball team will hold its first fall practice on Oct. 12, but two Huskies will be playing some high-level hoops this weekend.

Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier are in California for the USA Basketball women's national team training camp. The camp will run Saturday through Monday in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The UConn juniors are among five college players invited to the camp. Overall, 30 players were invited and 20 will participate, including former UConn players Sue Bird, Stefanie Dolson, Tiffany Hayes, Breanna Stewart, Kiah Stokes, Diana Taurasi and the Connecticut Sun's Morgan Tuck of the Connecticut Sun.

Tina Charles was invited and initially accepted, but is unable to attend due to an injury. Charles, a member of the past two Olympic teams, is a fixture on the national team."

Can't be true: they aren't even in Kallina's top 22 of current college players.

"and the Connecticut Sun's Morgan Tuck of the Connecticut Sun". Hmm

The way that the paragraphs are in quotes, I am assuming that it's verbatim from the article that the link is for.

But yet, KLS and Pheesa are ranked 30 and 23 by the jackwagon named Kalina. So yes I am very happy for our twins yet even more annoyed by that chucklehead.Head bang

Do ya think Kenny Kallina is baffled by Collier and Samuelson's inclusion on the nation team? :D

No. Kallina's selection is based on his own business interests, Team USA 's is based on merit. He knows that.

Questions for the wise folks here:

I know Candace Parker can't go given that she is playing in the WNBA finals.

Did she say that she would not go even if she were not playing now?
If true, does this mean that she won't even try for the 2018 World Championship team?
If true, does this mean that she won't even try to make the 2020 Olympic team?

Does she have any negative history with Dawn Staley?
Should an enterprising reporter ask Dawn about the topic...assuming for the moment that the answer to the
first question is 'yes'?

Dawn and Candace have a great relationship. Dawn visits her house whenever she's in California almost... most recently, Dawn and a few members of the team briefly hung out with Parker while in LA for the ESPY's.

And before that, the entire Gamecock team visited Parker's actual home during a series of games on the West Coast. They even played on her home court.. the pictures were on twitter at the time.

If Candace Parker has a problem with USA Basketball it's not because of Dawn.. and if Dawn had her way I'd suspect Candace would be on this team no questions asked.

How does it help his business interests to cite skewed opinions?

He is doing it right now. Drawing traffic to his site by writing nonsense. Look at the thread. It is called advertisement. Most people here don't even know the guy, never heard of him, now they know.

No questions asked? So you're saying Dawn disagreed with the decision by USA Basketball's Selection Committee not to include Parker on the Olympic team? How do you know that?

It would be interesting to see how many folks went to his site. Since I only heard of him in passing, it never occurred to me to to check him out.

I very clearly said "I suspect"...

..And I'm basing that suspicion off the notion that Candace Parker is one of the best players in the sport... the best players are usually on the Olympic team... if Dawn could pick the team, she'd likely pick the best players.. and if she was picking the best players then she'd likely be picking Candace Parker. Dawn also happens to be friends with that particular very good player... so it doesn't seem to far fetched to assume that she'd pick one of the best players for the Olympic team if she could handpick the team..

But that's not how it works. Dawn isn't picking the team. To my knowledge that's done via committee. Committees don't always agree, but they usually always reach resolution. Maybe she agrees, maybe she doesn't. But her job is to coach the team regardless.

Either way, CP not being on the team wouldn't be the result of some feud between Dawn and CP, which I was trying to spell out in my original post. I hope this explanation is clear enough for you.

But of course it was a feud between Parker and Geno!

Somewhere I recall hearing that it is good to have the best players...
The lets out talent them with individual skills approach...

Or was it most important to have a group of the right players...The lets out play them as a team approach...

May have been lets do both out talent them as individuals and out play them as a team approach...

Hmmmm....Finding that combination will be a challenge...

Dawn Staley as a player pretty confident you will win...

Dawn as a Coach...50/50 chance of making medal round in 2020...She carries her confidence as a player into her role as a coach...what is needed is her competency as a coach...

Dont get a winning vibe from her in this role...Would have preferred Muffet...

I don't dispute that Parker is one of the best players but the job of the selection committee is to pick the best team and it isn't always true that the 12 best individual players make the best team. Look at Tennessee for example. For the last 4 years we have been told that DeShields was among the best players in wcbb. Anyone who suggested that she damaged team chemistry was labeled a hater by the UNC & then the LV fans. Now, in hindsight, even the LV fans acknowledge that she was a "poison" to her team and that Tennessee will be a better team without her, despite her great talent. Addition by subtraction.

The pool of players available for the USA team is so deep with talent that they have the luxury of leaving players of Parker's skill level off the squad if there are factors that warrant it. No one is indispensible.

And if Dawn were to politic for her inclusion based on friendship then she is not the coach I think she is.
