I came up with this idea a few years ago and the Olympics reminded me of it. What if Division 1 had its own version of the Olympics? Instead of hosting NCAA championships in dozens of cities, what if the NCAA hosted most of its championships every year in late May over a 17-day period in a made for TV event?
A few sports would need to change their calendars (e.g. soccer), but I think it is something a lot of people would watch. Obviously football, men's and women's basketball, and baseball would not be part of this, but all other Division 1 NCAA sports would be.
Sports contested:
Soccer (m/w)
Hockey (m/w)
Volleyball (m/w)
Lacrosse (m/w)
Beach volleyball (w)
Water polo (m/w)
Softball (w)
Rowing (w)
Field hockey (w)
Gymnastics (w)
Wrestling (m)
Golf (m/w)
Tennis (m/w)
Track (m/w)
Cross country (m/w)
Swimming and diving (m/w)
Rifle (m/w)
Bowling (m/w)
Fencing (m/w)
For certain sports, qualification to the main even would be more restricted than current NCAA champions.
In men's soccer for instance, the top 16 national seeds would play a qualifier tournament at their home campus. Each qualifier would have three teams with the national seed getting a bye to the qualifier final.
For tennis and golf, team championships would be abolished and only individual (and in the case of tennis, doubles) events will be held.
