I know some of the old-timers here are familiar with the movie Charly. Cliff Robertson (not Robinson) won an Oscar as a mentally challenged man who underwent an experimental procedure that made him very intelligent, eventually surpassing his teacher. Of course, it wasn't permanent. The most heartbreaking part was when Charlie realized that he was reverting back to his former self and there was nothing he could do about it. At the end, Charly was happy enough playing in the park with a bunch of little kids. I think it's going to be a little different for those of us who have been on this great ride for the last 30 or so years.

I actually like to compare UConn's situation to the last scene in Training Day (Denzel being UConn):

Based on a book "Flowers For Algernon". Great book and great movie. IIRC Charlie was happy with his life before the treatment even though he was treated poorly by people, but was miserable after the regression.

And to answer your question (postulation) a resounding NOOOOOOO!!!!!

miserable during the regression. Ignorance is bliss. Tis folly to be wise.

Best quote from that movie:

Are you saying this post makes me a bad fan?

Not meaning to imply you are a bad fan. I understand you are saying we are DOOOMMMEEED. But these Chicken Little, sky is falling, posts speak volumes about where some "fans" are. No better time than now to show our support rather than throw up our hands.

I buy season tickets and go to all the games. I'm just not going to kid myself and think all is well when it clearly isn't.

When is the last time we lost a recruit that we really wanted and needed to a VCU? Twenty years ago?

Kentucky just lost Mudiay to SMU. It happens. Recruiting is just so hard to follow. I used to follow it religiously but have finally realized that we're just going to get whoever we get and we're going to be fine. It's been that way since the late 1980's.

My sentiments exactly. I'm aware of the pitfalls UConn is facing. But if DHam keeps his commitment and the current group does well I would say KO is well ahead of most fans expectations.

Every now and then I check out the women's forum. With Geno at the helm, and with the relative few number of female bb athletes, the UConn's women's program is almost a given for a NC year in year out and for Geno to get a certain number of top twenty recruits. But there are some women's fans that still panic when the team gets beat in the final four and Geno doesn't pull in a number one or two recruit. Definitely a sign of insecurity.

We lose recruits all the time and Larrier was a heavy VCU lean before we ever even started recruiting him and we still almost got him. Bad example.

You used to be our top recruiting information source so if you stepped away it says a lot. Somehow we get a good team most years and all the recruiting drama becomes moot. The recruitment of Brandon Bass comes to mind as creating the most hissy fits on this board.

I'm not an old-timer but I'm familiar with the book (Flowers for Algernon) and the film. When I was in junior high I had the brilliant idea of writing a book report that started out with sentences looking they were written by a 4-year-old, then got "smarter" and "smarter" (as smart as a junior high kid can get), and then reverted. The teacher liked it.

ANYWAY, screw you Waquoit!

Ollie knows what he's doing. Maybe you MISSED LAST SEASON.

I used to go to AAU events, ABCD Camp, etc. and follow recruiting like husky99 does. But not any more. Like I said, we're going to get who we're going to get and be fine so why live and die by what 17 and 18 year olds decide to do? Just not worth it.

I'm sorry that you didn't revert back. But that doesn't mean you can't have a full life in your own way.

Throwing VCU in with the rest of the mid-majors is completely misleading, though, as you know. They've been more successful over the last few years than a lot of the big time schools we typically recruit against. Certainly better than a Syracuse, for example. In 2011 they went to the Final Four, and they've made it to the third round the past two seasons. They are unquestionably a media darling, as is their coach. It's not like losing a kid to Southern Illinois.

No offense, but why is it always the older fans who need their hand held every time we lose out on a recruit? They should know better than anyone to take recruiting with a grain of salt.

Plus, this was a consensus top 60 recruit. It's not like his only two options were VCU and UConn and he picked VCU. VCU beat out a lot of the big boys for this kid. They were on him early and it paid off. I'm hopeful that us being in on D-Rob early pays off for us.

I think you youngsters are whistling past the graveyard. Unless we get a P5 lifeline I'm afraid this might be our future. I'm still going to go to games like I did when UConn was a mid-major. I'm not sure the millennials will be with me.

It's a legitimate possibility that the AAC will hopelessly suffocate this program, but it has absolutely nothing to do with anything that has happened on the recruiting trail over the last twelve months. We're loaded next year and we're probably going to be loaded for 2014-15. I understand all the apprehension regarding the conference situation; what I don't understand is why people act like what's going on right now is at all different than what happened when Calhoun was here and we were in the Big East. If we get to the point where there's a noticeable dearth in talent on the roster, I'll be worried. But nothing has occurred recently that would make me believe that is going to happen any time soon.
