from Jeff Goodman:

GoodmanCBS Kentucky's John Calipari expected to meet with UConn transfer Alex Oriakhi today. Oriakhi has one year left and can play immediately.

I'd like to see if Calipari can improve his skills enough for the NBA.

The APR infinite loop. One of these schools is going to get credit for Alex graduating, while UConn only gets 1 point for his leaving in good standing. It would be great to see a school getting 2 points for taking in seniors like Alex who leave their old schools because of APR troubles. The school that's banned keeps losing seniors, so it loses graduation credit in the APR calculations.

I don't know whether to gag or laugh.

All of the past issues have been a pain in the butt, but what a long strange trip this year has been.

Think back after last year's NC, then with the great recruiting class and preseason expectations.

Now read that again: Kentucky's John Calipari expected to meet with UConn transfer Alex Oriakhi today.

Strange days indeed.

I thought I read it in the Courant that Amore had "a source" (yes I know) that AO was looking for a place that guaranteed him 30 mins of playing time.

I don't know any colleges from his list that would even consider that. I even have a hard time believing AO actually said that.

Sounds like an AO Sr. quote.

Can anyone think of a player that won a National Championship with 2 schools?

Its probably happened before but just wondering.

Has there ever been a player that started for two National Championship teams at different schools?

Not saying this will happen with AO (certainly wouldn't want this to happen), but it is interesting to think about.

Alex isn't nearly good enough to compete with the talent Calipari is going to get. Calipari is doing this to poke Calhoun with a stick.

I agree to some extent. I thought there was a problem with the SEC accepting senior transfers?

That depends on how Calipari rounds out his current recruiting class. If he gets Noel and/or Bennett, he won't need Oriakhi. But he's getting his ducks in a row in case he doesn't get those guys.

If Alex switches to a major that UConn doesn't offer he can transfer to SEC school. According to Borges, there is a possibility of going from sociology to sports journalism

lets be careful for what we wish for. i cant imagine a worse scenario.....ao goes to kentucky, wins a national title, develops to his potential and gets drafted in the first round. calipari and ao, sr will gloat........telling people how much better it is at kentucky than uconn.....could actually impact recruiting even more.

Well Cal does know first hand what Alex can do if he plays to his potential. Not a surprise to me.

Kentucky limits the credits he can transfer and grades.

A grade of a D- is transferable.

Calipari may not want him if he intends to leave after 4 years but if a D- is transferrable why go elsewhere?

>> Transfer applicants should note that regardless of the number of transfer hours the University may accept, all candidates for a bachelor’s degree must complete 30 of the last 36 hours of their program at UK.

A minimum grade of D- is required on all courses transferred to UK. Some colleges and departments may require a higher grade in order for the course to satisfy degree requirements.<<

So this leaves it up to the imagination as to what majors at UK require a grade better than a D- from transfers?

1) Animal Husbandry? You've got to be really good at it!

2) Appalachian Family Trees? Learn the difference between Smith and Smyth and what happens if you screw your sister?

3) Deliverance and other home movies. Celebrate the first and greatest family movie ever. See and discuss the outtakes that would have gotten the movie an X rating.

If you told me during last year's FF4 victory over Kentucky that two years later AO would be playing for UK, I'd say you're insane.

i can't help but think that another reason Cal is after ao is that he struck out with some one on the recruit trail and we just dont know it yet...no way he lets ao take a ship if he gets both bazz and noel right?

Is it any wonder why UK players are always "on track" to graduate? Apparently GPA doesn't matter, only passing does. And they have joke courses.

APR does not require that they are on track to graduate. It only requires that they have passable grades in the courses they're taking. On track to graduate should mean they are taking courses in a sequence toward a degree or that they are fulfilling requirements.

Who defines passable and aren't there requirements on credits? You can't tell me that a player is allowed to get a D- in one course per semester and fullfil the APR requirements.....

Probably lost out on Bennett and getting AO will probably seal the deal with Noel. He'll have two Tilton kids starting on the defending national champion team.

It depends on the school, I guess. Even at the best schools, you get credit for a D, though you may not be able to graduate with a D average. You're allowed a D in one class without having to retake the course. If the player gets a D and 3 Bs, I'm sure he can meet the APR requirements.

As for the second part of your question, a student maintains status by taking a half load. But a school may have different ways of determining that. For instance, if you've taken a summer overload, that may count as part of your fall semester courseload, or an intersession course before the spring semester may get folded in (in order to maintain your status) with the spring semester. It would be nearly impossible for you to proceed toward a degree in such a fashion, but if the goal is to meet the requirements of the APR (i.e. leave your freshman year in good standing) then this is one way to do it.
