If my arithmetic is correct, Saniya Chong is now 90-1 as a member of the UConn Huskies.* That's a winning percentage of 0.98901. As some of you know, Larry Farmer of the UCLA men's team holds the men's record at 89-1, 0.98888. As of now, Ms. Chong has him beat. Let's hope she can inch that percentage up over the rest of the year.

Larry Farmer played on three national championship teams for John Wooden, 1971-73. The Sidney Wicks-led team Farmer's sophomore year lost but one game, then the two Bill Walton championship teams went back-to-back undefeated.

As an aside, Farmer's teammate Larry Hollyfield also lost only one game in Westwood. However, based on the rules of the day, he was not eligible for the NCAA his sophomore year because he had transferred in from a junior college and therefore did not get credit for as many games as Farmer. Hollyfield's junior college team went undefeated in his only year there. In high school, Hollyfield lost one game as a sophomore and then went undefeated his final two years. Consider that: He lost one game in high school and one game in college. He's got a strong claim to being a winner.

*As are the former walk-ons, natch.

What about Pulido and Lawler? Interestingly, Pulido graduates this year and has a better chance, IMO, of graduating with the record than Chong. That assumes we don't go undefeated next year but one never knows.

From an early age, Ossining's Saniya Chong showed the makings of a potential basketball star. Her 61-point performance in the Section 1 Class AA quarterfinals as a sophomore quickly put her name on the lips of hoops aficionados around the country.

But, she had doubters.

She put up record-breaking statistics in high school — 2,988 points, 320 3-pointers, 718 assists, 562 rebounds, 492 steals — won a state championship, plus Miss New York Basketball, Gatorade New York player of the year and Parade Magazine national player of the year honors.

I referred to them in a footnote in my original post. To me it's not the same thing, but I suppose that technically they would count. So yeah, Pulido has the best chance of an incredible overall record.

At any rate, it's a nice little feather in Saniya's cap, if only temporary.

Maya had 2 NCAA championships, as we know.

She also had 3 Georgia state championships, plus one "mythical' national championship, at Collins Hill.

Maya wins championships at about a 75% rate. Only Bill Russell is in her league.

And Larry Hollyfield! :D

He didn't play in the pros, however.
