The Big East two best teams are still dancing - St John’s and UConn. With Creighton still playing as well.

Karaban and McNeeley shot a combined 2-13 from three, but you win shooting 24% from 3 when your opponent shoots 17%. Alex made some big plays late when they mattered most.

The rebounding was by committee with all the starters and Reed getting 5-7 rebounds a piece. That combined effort made us lead Oklahoma in rebounds 41-34.

We are still shooting ourselves in the foot with too many dumb fouls (25) and turnovers (13). Add that to the 24% (6-25) quick threes and we had some ugly stretches. However, when you shoot 10% FG higher it is a tough hole for our opponent to dig out of. Ball and Karaban combined for 50% shooting and were our two leading scorers with 14 and 13 points.

Our two Centers once again played in a reactionary high hedge mode on defense, combining for 8 fouls. But, they also combined for 20 points (82% FG 9-11) and 13 rebounds.

I think Hurley finally settled into an 8 man rotation with Reed, Stewart and Mahaney coming off the bench. Chief still thinks that Reed is needed as a starter against good teams since we can’t afford to fall behind early. But, Hurley won’t change so the current rotation is the horse we will be riding.

Regarding inbound plays in offensive end sideline not under basket: I watched Solo carefully during a late game (+/- 2 minutes left) and although AK and McNeally did their (rather slow) runs around screens Solo just stood in the paint not moving or screening. wtf?

While I agree with most of the above, we did jump out to a 11-2 lead today, and I think reed would have ended up with 27 min if not for his foul trouble.

Chief........ if we start reed. What kind of points can you depend on from the bench? And its not like hes coming off the bench and playing 10-12 minutes. You do need a spark from the bench. Watch the tourney games you need bench points. J stew is capable of it. Hits a couple shots then goes the last 30 minutes without a shot. Stew and solo by far my favorite players. Play with all heart

Danny needs to factor the 8 center fouls last night into his defensive strategy. Florida will likely trigger more center fouls than Oklahoma unless he takes the foot off the high hedge high risk /low return scheme given this year’s personnel.

Good question. I think you are either a merit based organization or you are not. You can’t emphasize merit but make excuses not to reward it. Johnson did fine coming off the bench last season. In our losses this season too often we have dug a hole early, holes are difficult to climb out of when you make foolish turnovers and fouls. In fact, even leads are tough to maintain. Reed deserves to start and I believe he gives us the best chance of winning.
While we can throw Johnson a lob pass on a cut to the basket, Reed actually has a low post game, that can score points on a high % basis and if we can develop an inside threat out game to shooters on the 3 line, I imagine our 3% will go up. So much of 3pt % is catching the defense in between. It happens to us on defense for a different reason this season (high hedge recovery) and it makes good 3pt shooters out of mediocre ones.

Chief good to have the briefs back!
Thanks. Big game in just 8 hours. Only Big East team still standing. Maybe time for McNeeley, Ball and Reed to shine?
