The fact that we have just one returning starter can’t be overlooked. The chemistry, the picks & rolls and back cut timing all need improvement.

The starting lineup also doesn’t seem to come out with with defensive intensity we are used to - that will need to change because so often that sets the tone of the game despite recent stories about Euro BB and how defense can be more easily learned than offense.

I think Ball is doing a good job as a Newton understudy - he is a guy who can finish with contact, which some struggle with this season.

Karaban does what he does very well. Shooting, position defense and rebounding and even good shot blocking timing. He knows the offense and cuts and picks well. He should not be looked though to force the offense.

I also think we may have a running lineup in the rotation but that has to start with defense, rebounding and outlet passes. And that started with 16 minutes left in the game.

Reed is just starting to learned how to create space with his body on interior moves. If he gets better at that he will be a big factor especially if Johnson continues to get in early foul trouble.

In the second half Diarra entered the game and made four quick plays, two plays on offense and two on defense and that changed the tempo of the game. We need more of that. Hurley then rolled his dice with that and kept him in the game until the lead got over 25 and we never looked back . Thank you Hassan.

Once Hassan got us running Ross really shined, that’s his game.

I think McNeeley is an offensive talent and a good instinct rebounder. He needs to get stronger so he can finish better and mature his game as you would expect of even a talented freshman. He also needs to explode more on his drives. He will get better as the season progresses.

Mahaney is a good shooter who had a poor shooting night until late in the game. There will be better nights.

Hello JRoss! He did not disappoint us fans who just want to see if Dan's raving and ranting about you is true.
He is going to be a key piece for 3-peat quest.

A massive shoutout to Liam,back2back double double! He is a rebounding machine.
did not get his offense game going but doing all the dirty work and solid defense.

This team is so deep!!!

I think Ross might become my favorite player this year. Hurley wasn't kidding when he said something just started to click for this kid. His defense , scoring and energy were great tonight.
I agree, I like Ross with Diarra. They both apply intense defensive pressure and Ross fills the lanes well for full court up tempo basketball. There’s a place for half court Euro Ball but Chief still is an uptempo fast break guy.

Johnson getting early fouls is really helping Reed to get meaningful playing time, which is great for the team. But the team really hums on both ends when Johnson is playing at a high level.
Johnson still struggles with silly fouls. I hope he learns how to avoid the mistakes that cause them.

I think eventually Abraham may be very impressive.
He looked like a more well built version of Ross. HIs drive to the basket was impressive. Good word! If Ross starts playing at an elite level and Abraham were to start showing signs it wouldnt even be fair. Those two guys are monster athletes but also appear to have the skills to go with it just some refinement and time needed.

That’s a Nice silver lining, but reed should just be the starter.

Having a 5 that can pass is something that we have really benefited from in the past. Obv Cling and Sanogo were excellent, but in his 11 minutes tonight Samson had three assist and two of them were absolute beauts. The reality is that most teams in the country don't have that capability. SJ needs to give us 20-25 minutes a game if we want to reach our offensive potential.

I'm surprised at Hass' 15 minutes, but it's probably necessary this time of year to see what we have in others. Hass is a known quantity and his ability to change the trajectory of a game is special. I would assume when we get to the real non-con his minutes go up.

Bet the over on these cupcakes because there is no doubt our 'scrubs' are elite and will extend leads.

Diarra is averaging 18mpg to start the season which is in line with the 19mpg he averaged as BE 6th man of the year. I don’t see his minutes going up much unless he moves to the starting lineup. I would also like to continue seeing a ~25/15 mpg split between Reed and Samson. Not sure how you can think our ceiling is higher with Samson than it is with Reed based on what we’ve seen. Samson is averaging 6.5-2-1.5 while Reed is averaging 13-9.5-1

We might have 5 potential NBA players at the Forward positions. Amazing the talent there.
Alex and Liam definitely. Ross could be after his junior year but Stew aint gonna be in any more mock drafts at this rate. Who’s the fifth guy I’m assuming Abe?

Ross has a real chance and Stew has the potential but still needs to work on his shot. He has NBA body for sure. Yeah Abraham. Either way we we are super deep at Forwards which is great.

Diarra should not play more minutes. He dribbles aimlessly at times and disrupts the flow of the offense. He is more effective as a change of pace guy where he can exert maximum energy on defense. I hope he can locate the 3 point shot he had early to the middle of last year. Great player just needs to not try to do to much.

Hurley took a timeout at the 16:59 in the second half and he went berserk, it was pretty funny to see. Must have been defense he was unhappy with. We had 20 assists but the offense is still not what it was last year nor should we expect it to be yet as it’s a work in progress, we gotta keep that in mind.
Fouls at the 5 are going to be a challenge all year and as much talent as the team has Newton’s shoes are tough to fill as calm as he ran the offense.
