Chicago Sky @ Phoenix Mercury - 7/25/18

29-28 CHI end of first

DeShields 7-7 in the first quarter

Taurasi out for tech suspension. Should be a close game.

I’m at this game. Disappointed no DT, already had tix before she got her suspension. Dozens of school buses parked outside, and at least 60-70% of the crowd is little kids - thousands of them sitting in blocks with their school shirts on. All of them have foam “#1” fingers and all are cheering wildly - very loud but very high-pitched.

Game is sorta ‘meh.’ Lots of ball handling incompetence and lazy defense. DeShields is tearing it up, looking very good. Gabby started, but not doing much. Gabby is really ripped. Stef may be in danger of succumbing to Jayne Appel Syndrome.

56-43 CHI at the half

DeShields 15 pts (all first quarter), 3 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl

Griner 12 pts, 2 reb

WOW Griner got ejected. Flagrant 2 apparently. Phx has no chance now...

Side note - Gabby with only 4 minutes in the 1st half? She had 2 fouls - is that why she was taken out? Hopefully not an injury or anything...

Thanks - they wouldn’t show the replay at the arena. I thought BG just pushed Dolson down and wondered why it was a flag-2.

Gabby’s OK, has been back in off & on. Just not doing anything. Very tentative on offense.

71-67 CHI end of third

DeShields stuck at 15 pts

Bonner 20 pts, 10 reb, 3 ast

101-87 CHI final

DeShields 25 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast, 1 stl

Bonner 30 pts, 13 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl

I don't think it was deflected. Gabby just anticipated it. Her stats and PT were modest today, but she had 3 steals and continues to lead the league at 1.7 spg. Not too shabby for a rookie.

Sloot is on fire in the last week! Followed up her triple double w/ back to back double doubles. 36 assists in her last 3 games. Too bad the best PG in America not named Sue Bird plays for the Hungarian National team.

Phoenix has joined the group of teams that looked good at some point this season but now is slumping a bit. Minny, LA, Phoenix, Dallas, Washington and Connecticut are all lumped together within 1 1/2 game of each other in the standings (with Las Vegas only 1 1/2 game further back). Gonna be a really interesting stretch run for playoff seeding after the All Star break.
