Years ago when I was an undergraduate at Uconn I was often the beneficiary of a blind date. When I would ask, with hope, for a description of my date, I would cringe when I would hear that she was a lot of fun and liked to dance. I wanted to know what she looked like.

Now as a fan of the Red Sox, I cringe when I hear that the off-season additions have "character". I want to know if they can play. Is this deja vu?

Yes, but at least you know their stats. A blind date is like signing a kid out of Cambodia because you heard he could zing it.

I had a blind date once. Her cane was annoying as hell.
