CD appreciation thread

I don't think Geno would be the winningest coach in basketball if not for CD. They fill very different roles, but both are essential, not just for the winning, but also for developing the human beings. I don't think they'd be such a great team without the personal development, and I think their personal development is enhanced by learning to play great basketball.

For example, it was great seeing Shea and Kaili McLaren on the sidelines (actually the endlines) coaching Vandy today.

A hypothetical that I think about when I read threads like this is "How would she have done if she took her own gig? We will never know, obviously, but my guess is that she would have been ultra successful. A HOF assistant. What a terrific honor.

There aren't many other jobs that she would've taken, but I believe she was being seriously considered by Rutgers when they hired C. Vivian Stringer. I think had she been offered that job she might've taken it.

Geno might still be the winningest coach without CD. Or maybe it might be CD. There's no way for us to know. But what we do now is that the combination of them has been awesome for Connecticut basketball.

Some recollections [hopefully accurate] on CD and the Rutgers job:

Stringer clearly was Rutgers first priority. They did offer her the position [she was at Iowa] but
also they had eyes on CD as their second choice. Stringer was uncertain and took a long time
to say aye or nay to the Rutgers offer. CD was of course doing her job recruiting for UConn...this was in late June...maybe early July. At some point CD withdrew her name from being considered for the Rutgers
position due to her UConn job committments. Shortly after her withdrawl Stringer said aye.

I'm sure Rutgers was pleased with the job Stringer did there while of course all of UConn is
absolutely thrilled with CD. I'm guessing that CD would have said aye to Rutgers... being a graduate
there.

I have read that Geno encouraged CD to actively search out head coaching jobs [Penn State among them] but she has declined to do that. While I have no doubt that CD does discipline the players as needed I think she really
enjoys her role as 'mother hen' and often winds up closer to some [many?] players than does Geno.

The players obviously greatly benefit from a double dose of great coaches as does the program....12 ain't happening
without both,...nor is 13.
