Were the remaining schools that hard pressed for money they would allow this.

Today is a very sad day for me. I have enjoyed B.E basketball for the pass 30+ years. I will support UCONN where ever they go, but I am a bit conflicted about the other schools I like who are going to conferences that I don't like. I want to support them, but part of me can't get over that they broke up the BEAST

The Catholic schools were the founders of the BigEast. It was originally a basketball conference. I disagree that they broke up the BE. Football broke up the BE.

With the Big East name goes the men's B.E. tournament play in Madison Square Guarden!

And also sadly, we may have seen the last of conference tournament women's basketball in CT. The farther flung schools may insist on a more central location. What that will do to attendance, who knows?

Check the cover of Sports Illustrated. "LAST DANCE OF A GIANT" is the headline, mourning the end of "the BIG EAST, the Biggest, Baddest and Best Conference of Them All."

That sums it up pretty well.

I doubt that. Hartford wasnt central to the BigEast.
Hartford is the only location that will sell more than 500 tickets. The conference would be crazy to give up the revenue and fan interest.

IMHO if the America 12 wants to get fans, then attempt to get Mohegan Sun to host tournament. However, most likely the Catholic 7 plus 3 with play their tournament at the Mohegan.

They paid to buy it out from the others.
I suspect that the remaining teams (who all clearly want to move on to a better option at some point) would have been less eager to agree so quickly to giving up the name if they had known that the Commish would make it so that those schools would only get the $ in a seven year installment plan.

No one on the football side wanted any name rhyming with Least.

One of the funniest lines I have read in a while. Sums it up.

While we only have a year of it, we were nervous. Actually, I am sure UConn will get scooped up before all is said and done.

Yes, they will be able to run a great bingo tournament to fund it.

I think the Catholic schools have positioned themselves exactly where they want to be. They weren't able to attract the type of players needed to compete with the big public schools and without football dollars they couldn't compete financially. They were destined to remain as conference cannon fodder unless they could realign with schools at a similar level.

I remember JA saying that Mohegan bid on the BE Tournament but the Catholic 7 refused to play in a casino.

According the Mel Greenberg, ND was the school that was primarily against holding the tournament at the Mohegan. Even if there were other schools that objected, now that they're on their own and can't rely on UConn fans for attendance, Mohegan looks better now.

A facility located near the team they left behind, and NOT near any of the conference teams (other than providence's 10 fans) makes sense on what planet?

And I doubt Mohegan would be dumb enough to bid. The potential backlash from their CT customers is too great.
