"From 2006 to 2011, the conference amassed $17.7 million from those units, according to the N.C.A.A., which would not say how much of that money was earned by the seven departing universities"
That's a lot less money than others have been talking about, but at least this fellow has a source. Also, it makes little sense to me that this is the extent of the money. The NCAA doles out $500 million each year in credits. How in the world did the BE only earn $3.5m a year (or less than 1%) when 12-15% of the tourney teams were BE teams and they regularly advanced?
Something is really bad with Sandomir's info. It's much more likely that $17m was one year's take.
Sorry, I don't trust that number.
And another thing: they are talking St. Louis, Butler, Xavier, Creighton to join.
Sorry, when I think East, I am not thinking St. Louis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Nebraska, Cincinnati, Indiana. That's as far flung as Houston, Dallas, Memphis, New Orleans or Cincinnati. In fact, the football schools have fewer teams in non-northeastern or atlantic coast states than the basketball teams do. UCF, USF, East Carolina, Temple, Connecticut are all eastern.
No surprise a guy from a Catholic school leans towards the C-7. If the author of the article speaks with JC he would have two problems. He would have to point out the credibility UConn gave to the BE which over the last two decades pretty much equals, if it doesn't exceed, the validity of the BE in basketball. And secondly he would have needed an interpreter to understand JC.I wrote this on the football thread:
And one more thing: STFU Brey and Cronin. You both are johnny-come-latelys who haven't done squat. Which is why I guess you don't think of UConn and only think of the hangers on.
Why? That name means something. I will derive great pleasure every year that the ACC plays and the number of ACC regular season and tournament records for Pitt, Cuse and Ville will start at zero. And if UConn ends up in another conference I'll have the same sadness even though I will be happy if it's a better one than the NBE. And starting next year UConn could increase its BE superiority. Is it meaningless because the conference is so different? Yes and no. Never underestimate the vast numbers of unsophisticated fans that casually watch sports.Let them have the name. Whatever this band of misfits UConn is joining becomes, it will never be the Big East. UConn needs to move on to the next stage. Holding onto the name feels a little pathetic to be honest.
No there is value to the BE name. Screw em', they can rename themselves The Big Choirboys.Let them have the name. Whatever this band of misfits UConn is joining becomes, it will never be the Big East. UConn needs to move on to the next stage. Holding onto the name feels a little pathetic to be honest.
