Castle Textbook Defense+

Did not have no where near this rep in HS. Had the tools though.

Came here and Hurley had him locked in. Great to see that carry over on this level.
I remember while at UConn someone in the media asked him how he became such a good defender. He said he just started trying to play defense because nobody before UConn ever asked him to play defense.

.-.
And a good upbringing that allows him to remain humble, hungry, and very coachable. His reputation is that he absorbs what coaches and teammates have to share with him like a sponge.h
He's a guaranteed star.

Not a lot of defense being played in this SA game.

I sat across the aisle from his dad. You are right - great upbringing, and his dad was from a NY basketball background, despite Stephon being from GA , and had a great understanding of the game and how a player had to earn his minutes no matter how highly rated. No offense to anyone but wish he could have adapted another player.

I remember reading an article when he committed to UConn. It was about how he asks coaches directly what he was doing wrong and how to improve, and then going into the gym and doing the work. He would take weaknesses and turn them into positives. There was a thread once where they were asking what his nickname should be. I suggested Doomsday in reference to the DC character, because like I said, his coaches just described that if you got the best of him somehow, you weren't going to be able to do it again because he would work his butt off and adapt.

Agree, a very humble and special guy.

He is going to be the best UConn player ever in the league and win 3+ championships. I understand how high that bar is.
I would never allow myself to make such an extravagant claim. But I also do not reject it, which is my version of respect for your awareness & call-out regarding how high a bar you are referencing.

He could score the ball, but UCONN had Karaban, Spencer and Newton. He did what the team needed and he's getting paid back with an NBA career that will be a few years longer than average.

He’s extremely talented and landed in the best possible situation to get the most out of him.

I’m so happy he didn’t go to a team that would’ve made him focus on 3s and playing off ball.

.-.
What he did to Durant and Luka was pretty eye opening as well. Maybe the best in ball guard since? Dare I say…Ko$€?
Kobe wasn’t the best on ball guard for a lot of the time he was in the league. He was great for a period but then started to coast on reputation. There were better defenders than he was.
