Looking for a Boneyard history lesson, please.

Out of the four publications that are used to determine consensus All-American teams, how was Caron Butler only named 2nd Team by Sporting News and Honorable Mention by the AP in 2002?

Is there something I'm missing? Were UConn fans as puzzled as I am now that those were his only two mentions from the four publications?

For reference, here are the 2002 consensus 1st teams and 2nd teams, per Wikipedia:

First Team
Dan Dickau (Gonzaga)
21.0 pt, 4.7 ast (44.1% FG, 45.7% 3P)
Juan Dixon (Maryland)
20.4 pt, 4.6 rb (46.9% FG, 39.7% 3P)
Drew Gooden (Kansas)
19.8 pt, 11.4 rb (50.4% FG)
Steve Logan (Cincinnati)
22.0 pt, 5.3 ast (45.7% FG, 37.4% 3P)
Jason Williams (Duke)
21.3 pt, 5.3 ast (45.7% FG, 38.3% 3P)

Second Team
Sam Clancy (Southern California)
19.1 pt, 9.4 rb (49.4% FG)
Mike Dunleavy, Jr. (Duke)
17.3 pt, 7.2 rb (48.3% FG, 37.8% 3P)
Casey Jacobsen (Stanford)
21.9 pt, 4.5 rb (44.1% FG, 37.2% 3P)
Jared Jeffries (Indiana)
15.0 pt, 7.6 rb (45.7% FG)
David West (Xavier)
18.3 pt, 9.8 rb (53.6% FG)

Caron Butler's stat line in 2001-02: 20.3 pt, 7.5 rb (48.6% FG, 40.0% 3P)

He didn't really turn it on until February. We had a classic overtime win at Arizona that year when Caron might have been the 8th best player on the floor combining the two teams. Then he found another gear and was arguably the best player in the country in the postseason (with the possible exception of Juan Dixon).

But he got a late start at getting the buzz and the voting is done based on regular season.

Alright, thanks, that makes perfect sense. Just seemed weird that Butler was a no-show on the consensus teams.

This was my thought. His scoring average didn't top 20 until his season was over, and just overall he was having a good-not-great season until late in conference play.

It was weird to watch that Arizona game and see Caron struggling. Luke Walton seriously outplayed Caron that day. Good thing that Emeka and Ben (and others) had good games to bring home the win.

I watched that game on the balcony of an oceanfront condo in Maui. Awesome day.

What everyone else said.

Amazing how good he was with a bullet in his knee //sarcasm

Also, they had to leave room for the mandatory minimum of two Duke guys.
