Canadian pipeline helps UConn land defensive lineman Lwal Uguak

>>Edsall has an impressive track record of landing Canadian players, so when looking for defensive linemen, he placed a call to some of his contacts north of the border. Uguak, a member of the 2017 Canada Cup All-Star team, received rave reviews.

“We researched some things and found him, went up and recruited him and thank goodness we were able to land him,” Edsall said. “A good family, great kid, hard worker and it is just one of those things where you try to utilize all your resources to find young men for what you want to do and we have been very pleased with his development.”<<

Putting this kid at DT was not the smartest move by Crocker. He doesn’t have the strength to do that.

Really going out on a limb questioning the kid’s strength right now when Crocker is quoted in the article as saying just that.
Agreed - so why move him inside then to be crushed like a car in a junk yard.

It’s not like we have a lot of options at this point.

“He has some quickness in there,” UConn defensive coordinator Bill Crocker said. “He has long arms and good hands so he can create a little bit of separation. Obviously he is a freshman so the strength level isn’t where it needs to be right now, but he has some good quickness inside that we can do some things with.”

Traditional techniques and roles were... lets be polite and say not working.

Putting at least some speed in the middle as opposed to a traditional lumbering DT at least gives us the opportunity to slant and seek penetration and chaos.

Its not ideal technique, but ultimately our only chance is to maximize speed and havoc in leiu of technical sound defense. Its where we are until we can lock these kids in the weight room during the offseason.

Fine if they want to play him at DT in pass rushing situations. I'm going to be cringing the rest of the season in short yardage run situations when it's 3 or 4 undersized lineman, backed up by an undersized linebacker in Hahn and a 195 pound Husky in Swenson. The staff doesn't seem to have a "goal line" package or anything of the sort. Since last year I've been expecting to see an extra DT or linebacker come into the game, but we treat short yardage the same as if the offense has 4 WR's on the field.
