If UConn misses the tourney and declines the NIT, could that count as a self imposed sanction? Hypothetically speaking of course.

It sounds crazy at first, but this is really a legit question. This needs to be explored. Its a serious question that needs to be looked into ASAP.

This would be the ultimate case of making Lemonade out of Lemons.

Didn't a college do this with their bowl bid this year???

The NCAA would never allow it.

1) Didn't they already decline the proposed self-imposed sanctions? And wouldn't this be the same sort of thing?

2) The team may actually improve and be good next year. To ban them this year is not a punishment at this point. The NCAA wants to punish and make an example, so they probably will prefer to ban a 20-25 win (hypothetically and optimistically speaking) team next year.

Found this article. Miami declined their bowl bid.

From the piece:

By choosing not to accept a post-season bid, UM administrators hope to lessen the impact of impending and potentially severe NCAA sanctions.

This is the second time UM has taken itself out of post-season consideration. In 1995, the school pulled out of the bowl picture - losing a potential Orange Bowl berth - as part of a package of self-imposed penalties for NCAA violations.
Unlike '95, when UM also reduced its scholarships by seven, the school did not announce any additional self-imposed sanctions. Golden said Sunday he expects to sign 30 players in February.

It should be our call, but I have a feeling it isn't. The NCAA declined JC's offer to serve his 3 game suspension last year, so they'd probably be consistent here...wait nevermind, I'm talking about the NCAA, who knows what they'll do. They'll probably consult a Magic 8 Ball to make their decision.
