I wasn't able to watch much of the first exhibition game. Can someone provide a breakdown on how each player looked and some overall impressions of the team?

The little I did see, I was impressed with Omar's offensive game.

The rebounding looked scary. Are there any guys on the football team that played hoops that could add a little inside toughness, which I'm most worried about? :)

See post - Huskybass - First Impressions From AIC game

The backcourt was great, but not consistent. SN looked great at times. RB was terrible in the first half, but exploded to start the second. Omar Calhoun (3 pts. first half, 21 second) was awesome. Tyler Olander looked solid and confident. Showed some nice low post moves, was poised and played solid D against a very small team. DD needs to be more aggressive, but finished with 8 pts, 9 rbds (our leading reboumder). NG was aggressive, rebounded, dove after loose balls, and gave the extra effort we needed. RJ Evans was poised and strong, bulling his way to the basket in transition. Phil Nolan is long, athletic, needs confidence, but gives effort. He had trouble finishing plays and fouled out. Tolksdorf is German......

Rebounding will be an issue. Hopefully Wolf has improved some. They are going to have to rebound as a group effort. Hope this helps.

The Backcourt: will live up to the hype and expectations with the combo of boatright, bazz, omar, and a very solid RJ.

Boatright: overall had an ok game (have high expectations for him), but he showed in the first 5 min of the second half that he can be a prolific scorer and take over the game when needed. Don't know why he stopped shooting after getting hot, but played good D throughout. Looks bigger (put on some muscle), should have a great season

Bazz: Can't tell too much. Had a solid game but don't how much he is still recovering from his injury, looked a bit slow but that's expected. Chemistry with Boat and others already looks better.

Omar: Cold blooded. Love his confidence and plays smart basketball. Clearly has the physical tools to be an impact player as a freshman. Love the fact that he runs without the ball. Shot the three ball well, has a good looking mid range game, and had some nice drives to the hoop. Can't take too much from a preseason game, but hard not to get excited about him for the upcoming season and what he can bring.

RJ: Love what he brings to the team. Ollie puts it best, RJ is a player that ollie knows what hes gonna get from whenever he puts him in. He plays smart, not extremely athletic but his a big and strong guard. His size will come in handy during Big East play.

Frontcourt: Not very good. A small DII team was able score inside way too easily.

TO: Was solid. Liked his confidence, has a good stroke on his shot. Just don't know how he'll hold up in the paint on defense against bigger DI big men especially in the Big East. Love his passing ability, he had a nice connection going with Omar, I expect that to continue throughout the season. TO is a good passing big man and Omar is constantly moving in the half court.

DD: How well he plays will determine just how good this uconn team can be. If he can turn into the 4th reliable scorer along with boat, omar, bazz, this team should be better then expected. He played ok at best against AIC, I did like the fact he looked more confident and at ease on the court. Brought up the ball a couple of times, which can be a good thing to have 4 ball handlers on the court at one time, but still needs to work on his handle. Helped with the boards but then again its AIC, will see how he fares on the boards when the season starts.

NG: Played like NG. Very solid. Love what he brings with effort. I hope he shoots more. Guy has talent along with his hustle, has potential to be a real factor in games. Worked hard on the boards, don't expect that to change.

Phil Nolan: Wiry and athletic. Work in progress. Played like a freshman. Missed a couple of layups (in a row) but I think it had to do more with jitters. Looks too skinny to go up against the big boys. Needs time to develop both physically and game IQ wise. Had 5 fouls in 9 min of play.

Leon: Played very little. I was hoping to see more min from him. Can't really say too much, but liked the effort and the block that I saw.

Team Notes;

Team will probably have a bumpy start to the season, but that's expected. The team is very young overall. The backcourt, all 4 guys, will have to bring there A game to be able to compete with good teams, the team will go as far as they carry them. Rebounding will have to be a whole team effort, guards are gonna have to come down low and help out with the boards. Back court can really benefit from TO's passing game if they all move like Omar in the half court.

Key Number: 70

If Boat, omar, Bazz and Daniels can combine for 70 points, they'll put themselves in a good position to win. Anything less I don't like our chances. We are going to be giving up a lot of points in the paint and so we will have to heavily rely on our scoring to keep us in games. I know 70 amongst the 4 is a lot, but I also think its doable amongst this group.

* Take everything with a grain of salt, because it's only been one preseason game.

Can't really see 70 being the magic number. We'll be lucky to average high 70's as a team (Maybe KO really kicks up the tempo and presses?), and I think Giffey and Olander alone will be able to account for at least somewhere in the 10-20ish region of those points.

I think his number should be more like 50-55 for those 4. I expect the combination of Giffey, Olander and Evans to give us another 20.

So you are saying we average 70-75 points a game? Not sure about that.

No, I'm saying that the poster looking for 70 pts from the big 4 should be looking at 50 points from them and a total of 70 ppg in a perfect world. That seems more reasonable. I too have my doubts that we can average 70 but I don't think it's impossible. I think he was looking at 80-90 ppg if those 4 scored 70 and that isn't happening.

We usually do avg 70+, last year was kind of an anomaly. The drop off of offense combined with a faster tempo could definitely see us averaging 70-75 and giving up more points on the other end than we have in the past.

I hope you are right. If I had to guess, I would say 67 in Big East play. I didn't see enough improvement in Daniels to get too excited. Then again, Calhoun will probably be our first really hyped frosh to be as good as advertised out the gate. I really think DD is the key for this team. As he goes, so goes the season.

I went up to Storrs, and quite frankly in terms of wins/loses, it will be a tough year. The obvious is we have no inside prescene. Having said that, I don't care about our record this year - I will support the team as strongly as ever. We will see who the true fans are this year, since I expect the team to play hard - so fans should root hard.
Now for the players:
Son of Calhoun - Really like him as a player. Not Stanley R super athletic but athletic enough - He just has those uncoachable basketball instincts on offense, a thing most of today's players don't have. While not possessing a classic jump shot - when it goes in a lot - the shot starts looking better. My sense is it will go in a lot. He has a nose for the ball and finding the open seam. We are fortunate to have him.
Nolan - If this were football - he would be red shirting and lifting weights. Needs to get stronger and more explosive. May block some shots and hit some open shots. But if you love guys who finish around the hoop - Nolan is not there yet.
Boatshow: When he turns the switch on he can change the speed and direction of the game. To my Boatshow Chicago friends - hear me out - he needs to have that switch on throughout the game.
Bazz - While one of our best players - I don't think he likes the running game except an occassional great pass down the court. How that fits into what KO wants to do and needs to do will be interesting to watch.
Daniels - Has some talent - can run the court - hit some shots. Disappointed he did not do more over the summer to put on some muscle. This year he will need to help out on the boards.
Leon - l would like to see more of him - surprised at how few minutes he played.
Tyler - Has a skillset. Plays better when he gets angry - especially rebounding. Remains to be seen if in the BE he gets manhandled again inside.
KO - I think he did fine. Struck the right balance - added some schemes to the offense. Still needs to make running a mindset. Guys need to rebound, quickly look down court, fill the lanes, etc. Only Boatshow, Omar and Daniels have that mindset.
